To avoid overexposure to x-rays....

Hello, how do I know after how long a certain x-ray or MRI done once can be given to another doctor for a 2nd opinion without my having to take them again?  It seems nowadays physicians rely more on ordering MULTIPLE radiographs and I'd like to avoid an overexposure, even if gradually.

What I hope to know is, up to how many months is, say, a hip joint x-ray good for diagnosis?  Also, the same question for a head and neck MRIs?  Google didn't give me any answer at all...

Thanks ever so much for an explanation.  :-)      Rosedal

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
The time a scan is "good" for diagnosis really depends on the person, clinical situation, and medical condition.  If the medical condition is chronic, it is more likely the scan will be good for a good time period.  However, if the medical condition is acute (emergent), then the scan's value may be limited if too much time passes.  Usually for bone findings such as chronic pain, the scan/radiograph is good for a decent amount of time so you should be able to use it for 2nd opinions.  Hope this helps and best of luck.
