Leg pain at night

For the last two weeks I've been waking up with a lot of pain in my legs.  The pain it's so bad that it wakes me up and I have to move. After moving, my leg pulsates for several minuets after. Then I fall back to sleep just to be woke up later by pain again. I don't know what could be causing this but I'm worried because I'm worried because I'm 33 my father had his first heart attack at 38 and after his heart attack he developed alot of cardivascular problems which led to several bypass surgeries for him. He dies at 58 years old.  I myself have thyroid problems,I'm diabetic, and have blood pressure problems. I've never had leg pain before. I would appreciate your advice on what could be going on and if I should be concerned. Thank you, Sincerely Kelly Carpenter

Hi,
Thanks for the update. It is good to hear that the chest pain was not due to heart attack or from other cardiac causes.  Other possible causes of chest pain are musculoskeletal, pulmonary and gastrointestinal conditions. Further tests may need to be done to identify the cause of your chest pain. With this new development, seeing your doctor is indeed a good step. Take care and do keep us posted with your consult. Take care always.

I was put on nitropatches which seem to be helping. I did see my regular doctor but I don't see the cardiologist until next month. And, I have not seen a Neurologist. My primary care doctor told me he thinks it's either something with my esphogus or my gualbladder.  I did tell my doctor about my blood pressure problems and he didn't seem concerned.  But, I am still concerned I know I should trust him and his oppionion and he knows more about it then I do but I just would like to get my blood pressure stabalized. Thanks for the advice I greatly appreciate it.

Hi,
How are you? I hope you are feeling better. With the heartcath showing no blockages, we can narrow down the differentials to musculoskeletal and neurological causes. Were you able to see a cardiologist and neurologist? Normal blood pressure is below 120/80. Hypotension or low blood pressure may present with symptoms like lightheadedness, dizziness, or fainting upon standing. When there is insufficient blood pressure to deliver blood to the coronary arteries, chest pain or even a heart attack may be observed. Have this evaluated by your attending and have diagnostic tests done to determine the underlying cause. Take care always.

Dear Rowena Santos,MD

I wanted to let you know that on December 21 I went to our local E.R. for tightness in my chest and pain and tightness in both of my arms.  I was sent to MonGeneral Hospital in Morgantown WV for a heart cath. Thankfully there weren't any blockages. But, too while I was in the hospital I had another epoisde where my chest got tight and my arms were hurting and heavy. The nurse ended up giving me 3 nitro pills before this subsided.  I was sent home on a nitro patch that I'm to wear daily. I'm even more concerned now because I still don't know what's going on. And, at night a couple of times I've decided to check my blood pressure and once it was 99/53 and then last night it was 100/55. I don't understand why it keeps dropping.  I would appreciate any advice or suggestions you could give me. Thanks for being so helpful!

Hi,
How are you? Aside from the leg pain, are there other symptoms present? Leg pain can be due to a variety of conditions such as muscle cramp which may be due to medications, muscle fatigue, injury, dehydration or low amounts of potassium, sodium, calcium, or magnesium in the blood. It can also be due to atherosclerosis that blocks blood flow in the arteries, blood clot  from prolonged bed rest, infection of the bone, inflammation of the leg joints by arthritis or gout, varicose veins and even from nerve damage which is  common in diabetics. It is important that the underlying cause is identified because treatment will depend on this. Have this checked by your doctor for proper evaluation. Direct clinical examiantion and further diagnostic tests are important. Take care and regards.
