Very Irregular period/bleeding

I have had an irregular period since I started menstruating when I was 11.  I would get my period once every 3 months or so.  When I was 18 I finally got on birth control to regulate it.  I started on Ortho Tri Cyclin and then switched to Ortho Evra.  I was on Ortho Evra for about 5 years and had no difficulties with it and my period became normal.  I stopped taking all birth control in August of 2008.  I was expecting to have an irregular period again, but it is much worse.
On average I've been getting my "period" about every two months, but I bleed much more than that.  Like clockwork every time I have sex, I can expect to start bleeding two days later.  This bleeding usually last 2-3 days and then goes away.  The color of this blood differs each time from light pink to brown and from liquid to clumpy.  (I've already been tested for STD's that may cause this, and have been cleared of those).  I also get sharp stabbing pains near my ovaries, or pelvic region at random times throughout the month.  Also, sometimes when I sneeze, I get extreme pain near my ovaries, like a sudden sharp cramp.
This all has been going on since August 2008.  I have asked nurse practitioners  about this, but have received little guidance.  I do not have insurance at this time, so I am trying to decide how critical this is.
If anyone has had similar issues or perhaps knows exactly what's wrong with me, I would be very grateful for the guidance.

Hi.
How are you? I'm sorry to hear what you have been through. It is good though that you will be checking with your local gynecologist for proper diagnosis. Heavy menstrual bleeding or menorrhagia may be treated with drug therapies,  such as  the hormonal intrauterine system, tranexamic acid, anti-inflammatory drugs, or oral contraceptive. Take care and do keep us posted.

Thank you for replying to my post.  Ironically, after I posted the original message I had to send myself to the ER, due to extreme bleeding and horrible cramping.  After two ultrasounds and some blood work they categorized my problem as Menorrhagia and told me to follow up with a local OB-GYN to discuss options.  So that is my next step and hopefully I will find a complete answer there.  I know that my ER visit was no accident and that God was just helping (forcing) me to find answers.

Thank you again for the reply!

Hi,
How are you? Irregular menstruation can be caused by hormonal irregularities or gynecological issues. With the use of birth control pills, this can be  controlled. With regards to bleeding after sexual intercourse, this can be caused by  the presence of cervical polyps, cervicitis, infection, use of oral contraceptive, vaginitis, uterine fibroids, oral contraceptives or hormone replacement therapy, possible cancer and even vaginal dryness. If it persists, have this evaluated further by your gynecologist for proper management. Your medical history and direct clinical examination is important. Take care and do keep us posted.
