What kind of disease can this be?

Hi
My name is Andreas and would like to get some help about my stepfather’s disease.             His problems began about two years ago, but have with time got worse. At first we noticed it when all he wanted to do was to sleep. He slept for about 14 hours a day and we also started to recognize his strange behaviour. We went in and out of the hospital and after some time they noticed he suffered from an enlarged heart. It came to the point where he was not able to run his firm anymore, or even work at all. He had to put down his company in which he was really proud in, and he had to go into early retirement. At this time he was 42 years of age.
Our whole family was certain that his heart wasn’t the only problem here. He had started to have serious short-term memory loss. His speech was changed, he talked more in a bright pitched voice and he was slurring a lot, almost as if he was drunk. His body language was slow and he could not walk properly. The doctors wouldn’t listen and told us that he was just tired. With time his heart got better and is now fully recovered. But all the other symptoms are still here, only they are even worse than before. He continued going to the hospital every few weeks to run tests and to do scans, but they haven’t found anything. To us the only thing we could think was some kind of dementia like Alzheimer’s disease.  He has been to specialists in different areas. Neurologists and at the memory centre to mention a few, but they precluded both dementia and Parkinson’s disease.
At this point we feel kind helpless and we don’t know what to do, the doctors doesn’t seem to fully understand the problems and the hell we live in. And as bad as it is, he doesn’t really seem to understand how bad he is. He only repeats the same things everyday. “If I started to do things at home I will soon be better” or “If I only go to sleep for a few hours I will be okay again”
I would be happy if you could take a closer look at the symptoms below and see if you could figure anything out.
Thanks in advance
Andreas

have a stroke workup.  have they done a carotid ultrasound?

go to a teaching hospital for next workup.

have your doctor refer you to a diagnostician & / or neurologist.

if they aren't listening, ask them to put him in rehab hospital for evaluation.

Have them consider antiphospholipid syndrome.

Avoid CT scans as they deliver too much radiation.
