Pregnancy phobia

I'm 21 and I am scared out of my mind about getting pregnant - I won't even have sex sometimes when I really want to because it scares me so much. I want to get my tubes tied but I can't afford it right now. I use five methods of birth control all at once - pill, condom, diaphram, spermicide and rhythm method. I think that is why I am bisexual - I don't have to worry about getting pregnant when I'm with a girl, even though I do like guys better. I am scared of getting married too because it would mean sex more frequently. Is there any way for a 21 year old with no children to get a tubal for a reduced cost? Or even a partial hyterectomy (uterus and cervix only) because I have seriously considered that due to cervical cancer running in my family. Will they do that as an elective surgery?

I agree with jaybay, I think that you are so scared that you might get pregnant that it is now a phobia. You really should see a therapist about it. Sex should be a very pleasurable thing, not something to fear. Good luck

I am pretty sure that you can choose to have an elective hysterectomy at your age, or really that a doctor would not perform it.  Getting married does not necessarily mean having sex more- once DH and I got married, we actually had it less :(  Have you ever looked into the copper IUD or the Mirena IUD?  They are extremely effective and can be left in for 5-10 years, depending which you choose.  I just recently had a baby and since it was a hard pregnancy, I too am VERY much not wanting to get pregnant again for quite some time- I am getting the copper IUD placed.  It's always another birth control option you could add.  Why are you so scared of getting pregnant, by the way?

I can't imagine any doctor willing to sterilize a young woman such as yourself.  At least, not without a lot of psychological treatment beforehand.  You included the word "phobia" in your post title, so that tells me you are aware this is more of a mental issue than a physical issue.

Many women elect to not have children, but don't feel it necessary to undergo surgery.  I really think your life would be a whole lot easier if you saw a psychologist for a while about this issue.  Try not to look at therapy as a bad thing, or something to be ashamed of.  If you are completely honest with your therapist, you may find it to be very helpful in getting rid of your anxiety about a possible pregnancy.  Wouldn't it be nice to just be able to live your life without constantly having that worry on your mind?
