Combining Nebulizer Med.s

I have switched from Inhalers to mebulized medications: Xopenex twice daily followed by Pulmicort. I have been very satisfied with the results of this method of delivery but I was wondering if I could combine these two medications. I have read "no" and also that no studies have been done .... your opinion will be much appreciated.

You are correct.  The official recommendation is that Xopenex® Inhalation Solution (levalbuterol) and Pulmicort Respules™ (budesonide inhalation suspension) not be physically combined for nebulized therapy.  That is what we recommend.

Hi...I myself currently take many different nebulized meds...Xopenex, Pulmozyme and TOBI. Each has to have its own setup, not only because they aren't compatible but because they have a certain order of administration. Xopenex first, then Pulmozyme to loosen my secretions after the Xopenex has opened up my lungs and finally TOBI, tobramycin an antibiotic to fight the pseudomonas in my lungs after my lungs have been cleaned out. In your case, the Xopenex should go first to open up your airways and then Pulmicort, a steroid for the best results. If these were inhalers, you would take your bronchodilator first and then the steroid. So, it makes sense to not combine them even if you could so that each drug can work in the most effective way it can. Hope this has helped..Sunny
