Help to Quit Smoking

I have COPD with chronic bronchitis but the phlegm has gotten so thick and I cough so much I am afraid I am getting emphysema and I HAVE to QUIT SMOKING.  I know I should and I want to but I want it to be painless.  Any suggestions?  Unfortunately I have smoked for 49 years.  Please help.  Thanks.

I too, quit smoking on the day I was told I had emphysema. Threw em away and went cold turkey then a week or two into it I went to the doc and got Paxil to help with anxiety. It is going on three months and had not one problem.

You can also go to whyquit.com and lurk there, is a pretty neat site where people tell their little secrets and share their support.

When i found out I had emphysema I quit smoking. I used nicorette gum and it worked. I kept looking at pictures of my children, they are small and it helped. I just kept telling myself to get through the next five minutes and it got easier and easier.  There really is no easy way, but if you have respitory issues not quitting is a lot scarier than quitting. Good Luck. Go get gum. It will not be as painful as you imagine it to be

First of all, I am happy that you are making the decision to quit, that action is probably the most important for your lung health.I would talk to your doctor about smoking cessation, there are medications that can be tried along with psychotherapy (some people do well with hypnotism and other methods). One thing is certain, you need to have a good support system to help you.
I hope that other former smokers chime in here to help you with advice. I know it isn't easy, my sister quit cold turkey 7 years ago and is doing very well. Some people do well with the medications out there, such as Chantix. The process is very individual.
I wish you luck and hope that you succeed.
