Lung Nodules

Had a low-dose CAT scan 18 months ago that showed a 3mm non-calcified nodule in the left upper lung, as well as several calcified and partially calcified nodules in the lower lung. Was a 2-pack/day smoker for about 15 years, but quit 30-years ago. Doctor just rechecked my lungs with a regular CAT scan with and without contrast. Nodule has grown to 5mm. The report from the radiologist noted that he did not have access to the original scan for a comparison but said everything looked normal. When I questioned my family doctor, he said to come back in a year for a recheck.  Obviously the change in size has me concerned. Thinking of consulting a pulmonary doctor for some peace of mind. Has anyone had benign nodules that have increased in size?

Thank you for taking the time to reply to me. I intend to get a CD of the original scan & that of the latest and make an appointment with a pulmo doc. I'm trying not to worry about this, and, hopefully, another opinion will bring some peace of mind. Good luck with your October scan. I hope you will have great results.

Hi Grubbies,

I would get a referral to a pulmonologist.  From there they can refer you to a thoracic surgeon if neccessary.  It cannot hurt to pursue your options.  ANything that has grown in a non calcified should be investigated.  I am 44 non smoker, had a ct scan of upper and lower torso for stomach issues recently.  All perfect but nodule non calcified on lower right lung along the fissure.  I met with pulmo immediately, despite the recommendations of a wait and see 12 months.  He said he is cautious by nature and though the likelihood of this being nothing is high, he is having me come back for a ct scan in October.  If it has grown he is said we can either take it out or biopsy.  And mine is just 3x5mm.
