possible asbestos exposure

Hello,

Five days ago, my family went to Vancouver, BC, Canada. In a Royal Bank of Canada branch, I took my son (3 years old) to the bathroom. The door of the bathroom was stuck so I pushed it hard to close it. Some black stuff fell from the ceiling. We stayed in the bathroom for about 5 minutes. The building is an old building. I am worried whether these stuff can be asbestos and am concerned about my son's health and my health.

Any advice and suggestion is very appreciated.

Many thanks.

John

It is possible that the “black stuff” was asbestos but I would characterize your exposure as very minimal and the risk very slight, assuming that you avoided proximity to the material to the extent that you did not breathe-in fibers, if they were present and you made no bodily contact with it.  Should this not allay your concern completely, it would be reasonable for you to request an official report on the nature of this material, from the building Manager or the Royal Bank and, were you unsatisfied with their response, to report this incident to the Vancouver or BC Department of Public Health.
