Post nasal drip

I have suffered from PND most of my life. I have been tested for allergies and do take allergy shots however there is a difference between 'unprovoked' sinus drainage and allergies. I use a Water Pic with a special attachment for nasal lavage and that does help a lot. (Also I have not had a cold or the flu in years.)

I have tried all the 'natural cures' and I have had CAT scans XRAYS and MRI's and exploratory sinus surgery. I have been to multiple allergists and ENT's so I'm no amateur at this-I have worked very, very hard to find a cure. Some of the teas will help for a short(hour) period of time but some of the herbals make the drainage worse.

The only thing that stops the drainage so I can sleep at night is some locally mixed compound called C-PHED which is prescribed by my allergist. It has a small amount of codeine and that dried me up enough so I could sleep. It worked for years, then I had surgery and was on high doses of codeine and when I went off them, the C-PHED only worked if I increased the amounts. This is indeed a slippery slope-I can't keep increasing the amount of codeine I take forever.

I sleep with 3 pillows under head(hard on the back). I can't sleep on my left or right even with the C-PHED. I don't think medical science has a cure for this. It is miserable.

I'm a male 60 years old and have been putting up with PND for a long time. I am here to tell everyone, thank you all for your stories and medical nightmares concerning ENT's and Medical Doctors. For the last ten years I have put up with the hacking, coughing, spitting, wheezing, lump of mucous in the throat and some of the other symptoms you all experience. As of yesterday 2/20/2009 I started a regimen of nasal flush with 8 oz. water (boiled and let cool)  mixed with 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon salt & 1/4 teaspoon baking soda. Use this with a bulb to squirt into each nostril or snort into each nostril out of your hand, whatever works for you. I also purchased a bottle of Oil Of Oregeno from GNC, best $20 bucks I've ever spent. Have mixed 3 drops of OOO with 8 oz. tomato juice and have had only five servings and already I notice a big difference. I must also say I started this due to the cold or sinus infection which made me get on the Internet and search for some relief. I got feed up going to an ENT here in Parma, Ohio about 8 yrs ago. Told him my story and wanted him to scope my throat because I had read an article about node growths on peoples vocal cords or early signs of throat cancer. I had smoked cigarettes and cigars from the age of 14 to 32 and then quit cold turkey. Haven't smoked for 28 years. When my throat started bothering me, I made an appointment to have tests done. Went to Parma Hospital and  did the Barium Swallow while they X-rayed my throat. After the Radiologist read the x-rays, I was told everything was normal. Still did not have throat scoped  like I wanted & made another appointment with another ENT who scoped my throat in his office and told me everything looked normal to him.
My problem remained with me, the most disgusting being the constant spitting of phelgm and the sensation of some glob stuck in my throat. I too was given a prescription for nexium because he thought I had GERD. Didn't help. As of yesterday my diet will change -No BEER, WINE, MILK PRODUCTS and WHEAT PRODUCTS. Going to stay the course and see if this truly does help me. Thanks to all of those with a similar problem and I hope this helps some of you because we all are different. Thanks again.

These exercises will gradually help with the post nasal drip problem.Be patient and the benefits will show up and allow you to lead a healthy life.
You need to help your body to build up your immune system. The breathing exercises - pranayam is a holistic approach creating extra oxygen supply in the body and will slowly help with the health problem.Do the pranayam to see the benefits.Build up your timing slowly and after two weeks at the suggested duration you will start to notice benefits.

Bhastrika - Take a long deep breath into the lungs(chest not tummy) via the nose and then completely breathe out through the nose.Duration upto 5 minutes.

Kapalbhati -(Do it before eating) Push air forcefully out through the nose about once per second. Stomach will itself go in(contract in). The breathing in(through the nose) will happen automatically. Establish a rhythm and do for upto 30 minutes twice a day.(Max 60 min/day) Not for pregnant women. Seriously ill people do it gently.

Anulom Vilom - Close your right nostril with thumb and deep breath-in through left nostril
then – close left nostril with two fingers and breath-out through right nostril
then -keeping the left nostril closed  deep breath-in through right nostril
then - close your right nostril with thumb and breath-out through left nostril.
This is one cycle of anulom vilom.
Repeat this cycle for 20 to 30  minutes twice a day(maximum 60 minutes in one day).
You can do this before breakfast/lunch/dinner or before bedtime or in bed.Remember to take deep long breaths into the lungs. You can do this while sitting on floor or chair or lying in bed.

Bhramri Pranayam -Close eyes. Close ears with thumb, index finger on forehead, and rest three fingers on base of nose touching eyes. Breathe in through nose. And now breathe out through nose while humming like a bee.
Duration : 5 to 10 times
----
Only by doing you will benefit and will feel good that you can do something to help the body.Copy and print this to master the technique. This is  simplified pranayam for everyone and you do not have to go to classes to learn. This is for life unlike short term classes where you do it in the class then stop when classes are over.

I have been suffering with PND for over a year now - it's miserable.  EVERY SINGLE TIME I sit still, whether it's driving, watching TV or in bed I have to start swallowing every 5 seconds.   Doctor suggested steroids - they didn't work.

I had been reading through an earlier post which suggested probiotics may help /cure(?) as it could be an imbalance of yeasts, bacteria etc.   So off I went and bought some Yakult and some Muller Vitality.  I have to say that I am now into my 4th day and my PND has actually subsided.  I know it's early days but last night I went to bed and actually got to sleep without constantly swallowing and trying to suck down the phlegm.  I am really hoping that this really is a miracle cure for it as I want my sanity back!  I'll keep you posted!

I posted this on another thread also, sorry if it is repetative.  I have had PND for several years now, with the coughing bouts a couple times a day myself.  I too have tried many of the doctor recommended meds, sprays, etc.  The only solution I have been able to find is a homeopathic (all natural) remedy.  I take two or three Marshallow Root capsules (Nature's Way brand), which can be found in any natural food store (such as Whole Foods).  Marshmallow Root is an herbal remedy that assists with the entire repiratory system. I have found that when I start coughing, I take the capsules and within maybe 10 mins. the coughing stops for the entire day.  Hope this can help someone.  I wish there were another remedy (cure) that I could give and would love to hear of any others that work on a more permanant basis. Thank you for allowing me to post here.

Wow - I feel both relieved that I'm not the only one suffering from PND and this nasty weird unexplainable cough, and scared to death of what this may be.

I have suffered this cough since I was 16, and I'm now 18. My cough started one particular day when I was feeling perfectly fine: I didn't have a cold, or allergies, or anything. I was just sitting in class and all of a sudden felt an acute pain in my throat, then I coughed into my hand and discovered my first of oh so many disgusting, scary globs of phlegm.

Since then, I cough once in a while - I can go for a few hours without coughing or I can cough once every minute. When I have a cold or a bout of seasonal allergies, the phlegm is darker and sometimes bloody. Usually, though, it's just clear and thick.

For the past few days I've had a cold, and my cough had been particularly horrible: I've produced two HUGE globs of bright yellow mucous that really scared me to the point of tears. What is this!?!?

I also have The Lump. My glands on my right side feel HUGE and The Lump prevents me from really swallowing...

Also my ears always feel tight with fluid and I am often lightheaded and dizzy. I don't understand this but it scares me...

About the drooling problem, I too go thorough periods where every morning I wake up and there are spots of mucousy drool all over my pillowcase.

I tried Zyrtec and Nexium and neither did anything. I have cut out milk products and coffee, and neither has done anything so I've returned to drinking them.

I can't wait to go to the store tomorrow to get some OOO - I'm DESPERATE.
