Question regarding Blood in Phlegm

Hi,

First of all I am 22 years old and a non smoker.
I had caught a realllly bad throat infection and cold (WITHOUT COUGH). One day, in the morning, I suffered from the same throat infection then I gathered some phlegm and spit, I saw some blood streaks. This happened twice. I had showed the problem to two doctors and they say nothing's the matter, its just due to the bad throat infection, and they gave me throat infection relieving drugs. I had my X Rays, and blood tests done with the doctors. I had no cough, and the drugs they gave me for throat infection cured it. The very mention of blood scares me....could there be any other reason?

While there are always other possible reasons for blood streaks in phlegm, the one given to you by your doctors is, by far, the most likely.

If you aren't coughing then it sounds unlikely it is coming from your chest.  Even if it was, most of the time it's from a broken vessel from coughing so hard.  I cough up blood sometimes from sinus drainage.  The blood in my sinuses (also from broken vessels for various reasons, drains down my throat, so when I cough it out, it appears that it came out of my lungs.

I really wouldn't worry about it unless it doesn't clear up after a while.
