Slightly Elevated Diaphragm

I have had shortness of breath 24/7 since January 25th (2 1/2 weeks after gallbladder surgery).  Bloodwork fine, cat scan shows lungs fine, echocardiogram fine, arteries fine.  No chest pain or tightness, just not getting the 100% feeling of oxygen in my lungs.   When I lie down at night, the breathing is a bit more relaxed and I can sleep ok.  Today I went for a sniff test and asthma testing.  It was found that my right diaphraghm is slightly elevated.  I have no asthma.   Would the elevation of diaphraghm be as the result of the gallbladder removal?   What happens next?  Thanks.

Hi, it may not be related gallbladder removal and diaphragmatic paralysis. If sniff test is positive it could indicate diaphragmatic paralysis. Is it unilateral paralysis? Besides imaging studies, nerve conduction studies may help to diagnose the paralysis. Most patients with unilateral diaphragmatic paralysis are asymptomatic and do not require treatment. So, if you are asymptomatic you may not need any therapy now. And many times paralysis resolves on its own, albeit slowly over a period of months to more than a year. If you develop symptoms of dyspnea on exertion, then you may then need surgical management. For now wait and watch and good luck. Regards.

Thank you for your response.  I forgot to mention that the sniff tested showed no paralysis.  The pulmonologist did note weeks back that there were two thin lines at the bottom of my lungs (one on each lung - atelectasic).  I'm wondering now if after my surgery I didn't get all the anesthesia out that I should have through deep breathing.   My breathing issue remains consistent throughout the day - does not get worse on exertion.  I inhale and exhale like a healthy person does - no hyperventilating.  I am back to see the pulmonologist's assistant on April 8 for her to go over all the test results and to see what the next plan of action will be.  I would like to get an x ray of the abdomen to rule out anything there.  It's now April 3 and the breathing issue continues.  Thanks again.
