Someone help me please

About 4 weeks ago i started to develope difficulty breathing. Not a big thing but i felt a pressure in my chest and that i just wasn't breathing normally. I went to the doctor the first time and he said that i was probably developing allergies and gave me nasonex. I used the nasonex and the symptoms did not go away. I started to become incredibly obsessed and anxious with these symptoms and so i went to the doctor once again. He gave me an asthma test which i pretty much passed but was just alittle bit below he then prescribed me advair. The symptoms were alleviated quite a bit by advair however they did not fully go away and would return with greater problem at night. At this point my parents decided i was having panic attacks because i was complaining of chest pains. I had become obsessed i thought i might have congenital heart disease or pulmonary edema or some sort of horrible ailment. Needless to say one night i felt particularly bad and convinced my mother to take me to the emergency room. My lungs felt very weak and the doctors there took my blood pressure at 153/81 pulse of 85 i was very anxious though so i would assume these were false calculations. I've had a chest x-ray and and ekg done both were normal. Blood work is presently being done on me. During thise whole episode i've been sneezing every now and then and spitting up this greenish stuff sometimes that has blood in it however the doctors tell me there is no fluid in my lungs i cough every now and then as well. My lungs don't feel right  now i'm on anxiety medication and antidepressants could this be real?

Hello Alex,

My name is Yvonne.  I too have been experiencing difficulty breathing in the last 5 weeks. I am 39 years old and this is the first time I have ever had this much difficulty shaking anything.  5 weeks ago I had a sore throat and was given PenV as they thought it was a strep throat.  I was given antibiotics for 10 days but but in the first 4 days I developed hives on my back and was having difficulty breathing.  By the seventh day I couldn't hardly breath or get out of bed and then I realized I must be having an allergic reaction to the penicillin.  I immediately stopped taking it.  My breathing got a tiny bit better, but since then I have been back to my doctor who told me not to worry I was probally still having a reaction to the penicillin and it would go away.  It didn't and last week I went to a walk in clinic because I was coughing up green and yellow mucous.  The gaging when I was laying down would make me throw up this mucous and I took a bag with some in it to this clinic.  The doctor was very nice and told me that I had a chest infection.  I told him I felt fevered and he agreed although both of our thermometers said otherwise.  It was nice that he agreed with me, I thought I was going crazy.  I started on sulfameth/Trimeth and have been on these for 6 days now.  When I would take these antibiotics the first few nights I would throw up the mucous.  I thought this was a good sign because I thought this would clear my lungs.  Unfortunately, my lungs aren't any better.  I work as a telephone operator for a telemarketing company and I am on the phone a lot.  The air quality in the building is terrible, there always seems to be several people sick with one thing or another.  I am actually a bit scared myself about why this is not clearing up.  I will definately ask to be sent to a specialist.  I will also check out the gastric reflux theory because I seem to have a lot of bile and acid when I do throw up.    Hang in there Alex, I realize that you are scared and with reason.  But knowledge and a good doctor to listen to you or just someone who can tell you that you are not going crazy is the best thing.  You must surround yourself with positive people.  And continue with whatever testing is needed, that's what I am going to do.  I need a better humidifier in my bedroom than the one I have.  I will buy one tommorrow, and let you know if I have any relief there.  Please keep me informed of how you are doing.  Try to get off as much medication as you can.  Believe me, you are much better off if you can ween yourself off and talk to a good therapist instead for your anxiety.  Hope you get some answers and relief soon.

Alex, I hope you will go to see a LUNG SPECIALIST doctor, called a PULMONOLOGIST! This type of doc can tell you what's going on with your lung(s)! You could get peace of mind, that it's not cancer, if you would go and find out what IS happening, with the help of a good Pulmonologist.

Lungs are their specialty! I also think you should take the LUNG LINE nurse's advice, and see a good Allergist!

Let us know what you find out, once you are seen by some SPECIALISTS!

Hi guys, i'm still kicking but i still feel that problem in my lung especially to my right now. I'm on antibiotics because the doctor did not like the look of my sinuses and apparently it was dripping some sort of brown fluid into my lungs which i cough up occasionally. I'm so scared right now that i have lung cancer even though my chest x-ray and my bloodwork was normal and that i don't have a persistent cough of wheezing. I'm depressed anxious and feeling horrible my family is helping me out but i'm still very very scared. Could a chest x-ray give a false reading if i forgot to inhale all the way when it was getting taken? i also found alot of new freckles on my stomach and chest even though i have freckles all over my chest and stomach have usually been clear. I'm having a horrible time sleeping even with ambien and ativan. I've lost weight about 10-15 pounds but haven't been eating as normally or as often as i usually do. A chest x-ray and bloodwork being normal would rule out cancer right? I'm so anxious right now i no longer no which symptoms are real and what i'm creating. I'm also on about every medication known to man. lexabro for anxiety-depression . Ativan for panic attacks Ambien to sleep . biaxin as an antibiotic . tussafed as a decongestgent and expectorant and i've stopped using advair because although it helps in the begining towards the end it leaves a burning sensation in my lungs. I don't feel weak my temperature is normal I just still have discomfort breathing in my right lung and i'm still petrified it could be cancer. Anyone got any good ideas? btw i'm 23 6'1 225

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Even people who feel anxious can have real medical problems.  It is hard to tell from the description of your symptoms exactly what is going on.  However, on two different occasions your doctors saw or heard something that caused them to give you medications to treat upper and lower airway problems.  All of this could be caused by allergy, a viral lung infection, a sinus infection, or something totally different.  It is obvious that you are still concerned with these symptoms.  Now you are on other medications.  I would suggest seeing a Board Certified Allergist who can probably sort all of this out for you in a visit or two.

You sound as if you're on the same treadmill I was on last year.  You may have originally had a problem with your breathing for whatever reason, and the Advair probably started to relieve it.  But the anxiety and panic you keep feeling is very real and is most likely the reason you're still having problems with your breathing.  You get scared, you become anxious, you're constantly focused on your lungs, and you've pretty much convinced yourself that you have something really wrong with you that they haven't found yet.  All you end up doing is going in a circle - you have trouble breathing, you get anxious, the anxiety has an effect on your respiratory function, you have trouble breathing....and on it goes.  You probably need to do what I did - break the cycle.  I ended up taking an anti-anxiety medication for about a month which helped stop the fear and the panic attacks I was starting to have, which I'm sure is what you're starting to have, too.  But it took about a month for me to start feeling better.  Nobody understands how scary it is until they've been there.  You're fine and then one day you're having trouble breathing, something you've never had before.  And all you can think is, "I'm gonna suffocate" or "I must have something wrong with my heart" or "I have some dreadful disease" and you make yourself a basket case.  I was such a wreck that my doctor just admitted me to the hospital and did every test he could think of just to rule everything out.  Ended up telling me he wished he was as healthy as I am.  You are so normal in what you're feeling, I've been there, lots of others have been there.  The worst thing they can tell you is it's all in your head.  I had gotten to the point where I didn't give a damn where it was, just make it go away.  And eventually it did.

Now, I'm a little concerned about what you're spitting up.  Didn't anyone check that?  It could very well be drainage and that little bit of blood you're seeing is just from the coughing and the actual spitting up.  But I think I'd ask for some antibiotics anyway, as you may have a respiratory infection.

That said, you could very well have the beginnings of mild asthma, which the Advair would relieve as yours did.  The fact that you feel worse at night is usually consistent with asthma, too.  You can pass an asthma test and still have it, especially if it's mild.  By the way, they told you to rinse your mouth well after using Advair, didn't they?  Be sure you rinse it several times and spit the water out, don't swallow it.

Well, let us know how you are and what happens, ok?  I hope you start feeling better soon.....

Alex, I agree with the others, BUT...

Have you been seen yet by a lung specialist doctor (pulmonologist)? If not, I urge you to go to see a good Pulmonologist, soon.

Anxiety can be a factor, but it would be good to find out if anything else is going on. A person can have more than one thing at the same time.

Some things that can cause nighttime problems with breathing, are (at least):

1)Asthma,
2)Gastric Reflux, causing either lung problems &/or vocal cord dysfunction (VCD) attacks,
3)Bad air quality in your home &/or school, etc. (toxic fumes, dusts, mold, etc.)
4)Respiratory infection(s)
5)Anxiety
6)Other problems that good doctors can help you figure out

If you are anywhere near Nat'l Jewish (in Denver, Colorado), you could get diagnosed, for sure, at Nat'l Jewish! Their phone number (LUNG LINE), is 1-800-222-LUNG(5864). Call between 8am & 4:30 pm, Mon-Fri, to get good advice!

Sincerely, Concerned lady
