Uncontrollable Coughing when I take deep breaths

Yesterday I noticed my throat was a little mucousy and I was coughing a little, then later that night I got a really bad cough and when I would try to breath like normal it feels like there's a scratch in my throat that makes me cough so I can only breath shallow without coughing. I also got coughing so hard I coughed up/vommited mucous 3 times and it was very thick. When I start coughing it's hard to stop and I feel like i can't breath. This morning I thought it might have gone away and I feel a little better but I still can't take a full deep breath without coughing, I've looked up symptoms and think it might possibly be bronchitis? But I have no idea, also my boyfriend had the same thing happen but he also got very bad chills last night, he was under 3 blankets and still was shivering with goosebumps and I had to make him get in the hot shower to warm up. We both smoke cigarettes but have stopped sense this happened, don't know if we should go to the doctor or wait it out, thanks in advance for any advice or answeres!

You may have something contagious - both have same or similar problems?  Yes, it is not two days since you posted, if still not better see a doctor, maybe a walk-in clinic - or urgent care clinic.  This is all short of going to the emergency room and should be far less costly.

Remember, our bodies are the most important thing we can invest in.  Stopping smoking was a good move, stick to it.
