Vasomotor rhinitis?

I (16) just woke up one morning in January last year ('07) and discovered my nose had swelled up and was red outside as well as inside ( one nostril was red raw inside). Since then I have been allergic to almost everything in the enviroment - I can't walk by grass or trees without my nose swelling up (and releasing a watery discharge) and this happens all year round!

My doctor diagnosed me with rhinitis but antihistamines he prescribed me don't work, or on the occassions that they do, not for very long! There are no other symptoms apart from the sinuses.

Could he have misdiagnosed me, I mean does everyone develop allergies literally overnight? It has ruined my life!!! I used to be active and involved in a lot of sports but can't pass a field now without my nose swelling up and it is so uncomfortable and irritating.

hi - I have nonallergic  (Vasomotor Rhinitis)   I know what you mean about this ruining  your life.  I have had this for 6 yrs. now.  Constant 24/7 post nasal drainage, blocked nasal passages that clog up on one side then the other side.  I have tried every nasal steroid spray that was ever invented I think and even oral steroids.  Nothing helps.  I irrigate my nasal passages twice a day with the NeilMed nasal bottle and the pre-mixed  solution.  The Ent doctor at Mayo Clinic said that it may not seem like it is helping but it really is.  Could have fooled me!!!!! But I just keep on doing it.  What have you tried for your rhinitis?  I don't get watery nasal discharge out the front of my nose but some people do - mine is down the back of my throat.  Do you get sore throats from your drainage? or is it coming out the front of your nose?  Try some steroid nasal sprays or if the drainage is real watery and coming out the front of your nose, then Atrovent nasal spray might help with that. It is a prescription nasal spray.      Laaz

You awakened with a swollen nose in January, a time of the year when there are no grass or tree pollens in the air.  That suggests that the inflammation in your nose, called rhinitis, may have begun as non-allergic and is now both allergic and non-allergic.  This is common.  This is a problem that should be sorted-out by a board certified allergist.  It is highly likely that it will be possible to control your problem with the administration of an inhaled nasal steroid.

Good luck.
