What is the crackling and coughing specially at night when laying down

I started coughing dry evertime I cough I get a head ache. It ‘s been 2 days now that I take over the counter, but it doesn’t help a bit. I usually cough at night a lot. And lately I been hearing crackling when I dit or lay down.
