When inhalers don't help

I do have asthma as I'm also a former smoker. Wasn't a heavy one though. I quit 4 months but now I've developed an odd lung disorder. This problem is completely different from an asthma attack. Instead, it feels like my lungs are collapsing and I can't catch full deep breaths. As if I'm very limited to an oxygen tank supply. It happens most when I'm sleeping. I would awake to use my inhaler but that doesn't help... What is wrong with me? It comes and goes. For a few days I'd sleep and breathe well then I'd wake up feeling like my lungs are being squeezed together.
