As a suggestion I would see a cardiologist and at least eliminate the possibility of heart problems.
I have been struglling with the problem of breathing in the mornings for last two-three years. It started with only having a desire to yawn (trying to get more air) about three years back. Since than my breathing (same problem- trying to get more air and I do it by yawning) is getting worse. I saw lot of specialists and all gave different advise and that's why I don't trust any-:)
I did some research myself and thought it might be asthma, Sleep Apnea, Allergies, or some neurological problems as I had to deal with lot of stress in 97 when this started.
Currrently I suffer:
1) Problems breathing especially in the morning. Feeling breathless even if I lie down for few hrs to watch TV I start having the same problem.
2) I suffer from Allergies and I am on medication (Alegra)
3) I get nausea very easily especially if I fly a two seater airplane, rides, or run very fast.
4) unusual sweating in the nighttime, has happened few times if I take Tylenol-flu or Claritin-D.
5) Skin pigmentation on face (little bit) and I am mentioning this as I have seen this change in 97 as well.
I have gone through all advanced testing of breathing, polysomnography (overnight sleep study), C-SCANS, X-Rays, and other blood, urine and physical checkups. I have gone through several medications including aerosols (for Asthma), steriods, anit-histamines, CPAP(which I did not use as it made me completely out of breath), and other medications I don't remember the names of.
Studies show that I might have mild sleep apnea. This was only found by my doctor when I mentioned him one day that I "might" have sleep apnea and that's when he asked me to go for overnight sleep diagnostics. hmm....I was really disappointed that after one year of him treating me for asthma and after me reading teh article on apnea, he asked me to go for the study-:(
I am still not convinced what my problem is as I have exhausted all the resources. I would really appreciate if someone can guide me in right direction. I am 5'11" and 170LB male.

Having difficulty breathing when lying down could be due to many different things. If the difficulty breathing gets better as soon as you arise and there are no other problems during the day, this is of less concern. If the symptoms continue with other activities and times of the day, this might be more of a problem. When someone is lying down the problems could be from the nose, sinuses, heart, lungs etc. It is very difficult to tell without a thorough examination and perhaps some tests. Measuring lung function is an easy test to perform that would give you an assessment of how your lungs are working.
The key to alleviating this problem is to identify the source of the problem. I would work closely with your physician indicating how much of a problem this is presenting to you. If the difficulty persists, I would suggest seeking other options, such as seeing a specialist.
