What is known thus far, from your description, is that you have a (bleeding)  tumor or an infectious process, either of which could present as a “hollow mass”.  If a tumor it could also have this appearance and be benign or malignant.   It is not uncommon for what at first appears to be a tumor to turn out to be infection and your doctors, including the oncologist will be aware of this.

The first order of business must be to determine the nature of this mass before any consideration of therapy.  One of the most efficient ways to confirm the diagnosis in your situation would be to undergo bronchoscopy with biopsy.  If you do have a bronchoscopy performed by a lung specialist, it will be very important for your doctor to send ample material to the laboratory, without fail, for TB, Fungal and Standard bacterial cultures.

Good luck

the results from the brocoscopy showed no cancer was relieved for a day but now the oncologist called and wants to do a pet scan so i guess they still think its cancer. do they do a pet scan for any other reason?

but in the consultation  2 days before he said it was probably cancer and also said that if i felt a real urge to smoke i should as the damage was already done and then he started to bring up his mother who had lung cancer. i thought this was very strange

had the bronchoscopy Tuesday and they said i should here something back by today Friday. they were not able to see the tumor but did something called feathering to get cells. the lung specialist said he saw nothing bad on the way down and said that my lung test that i had an hour before was normal which really surprised me given that i had smoked for so many years. just waiting it out today already 2;30 .
