what causes progressive chronic productive cough and / CT scan.

I am 31F, with progressive difficulty breathing for 3 years. Symptoms getting worse with chronic cough (initially from dry cough to now productive cough), with increasing blood seen with the cough. it's occurring daily and blood seems to rush up from my airway to the throat, my chest feels pain and tight with SOB.

I had CT chest done a year ago. At that time, i have cough with little sputum and occasional chest pressure/discomfort and SOB, and little blood streak coughed up. But now all symptoms are worsening.

1.Should I get another scan? I am worried to learn that my chest is now full of 'disease' and i am worried about cancer.

2.When my symptoms started and had the CT done, should the scan show up something or some really bad things is missing from the scan?

3. I had Pulmonary function test and it showed minimal obstruction in small airways. What does that mean? and how is it correlate with my symptoms?

I am really worried about sinister disease since I do feel worse and worse. I am sick. I get bloated tummy area (feels full always), pain under lower middle breastbone and RUQ pain. I feel my diaphragm is stuck when breathing in. My chest feels heavy pressure and discomfort on minimal walking. I feel that my chest cannot expand when breathing in. I feel that i am dying.

Please reply.

Hi

I have had productive cough for three weeks now. I took a dose of antibiotics, but still did not help. A doctor gave me anti-allrgy druigs but have helped  just abit.

The cough is productive, white in color or darkish, no pain and no blood. I have a history of allergies but never such productive cough. Though the cough is slowly reducing, I feel uneasy when coughing and its taking rather long. I had itchy eyes too but they are ok now. Runny nose, yes, sometimes in morinings. But cough is my big problem

What could this be??

You need a repeat CT scan.  A CT scan is very sensitive in detecting hemoptysis.  Any lesion or spot in the lung, capable of repeatedly causing you to cough up blood, would usually be evident on a high resolution CT scan of the chest.  You need to discuss the results of the pulmonary function tests (PFTs) with the doctor who ordered them.  This doctor is the best person to answer your question of how the minimal obstruction in the small airways correlates with your symptoms.

Coughing blood is called hemoptysis. It sounds like you should be under the care of a pulmonologist and having further tests to try to identify the cause; such as followup CT scans and biopsies.
A university clinic tends to be the best place to diagnose difficult problems. Web site with more info at:
