Gardnerella Vaginalis and Candida

This is my situation and I'd really appreciate some advice. I have been testing positive for gardnerella Vaginalis for the last 8 months or so.I am male.  I go on Metronidazole, Duolac for a week, get re-tested and test positive again, and then start the whole antibiotic process again. My partner is negative. I have no symptoms at all, and get sick when on the antibiotics. Recently, as well as still having Gardnerella, I have tested positive for Candida. I live in South Korea and the doctor again is ready for me to go and pick up the latest meds. I went back to Uk where I'm from and saw both a specialist at a GUM clinic and also a GP. Both said I shouldn't worry at all about being positive for the 2 above conditions. They are not serious, and present no threat. My question though, if this is so, why does the doc in Korea want me to go on the meds again. For profit? Can the 2 conditions be spread and cause harm in others? Can they increase the chances of more serious infections?.....and lastly, by constantly being on the antibiotics, 10 a day for week usually, am i damaging my immune system?

Yes, you are a carrier.  We share the same biofilm as our intimates partners.  Heck we even share biofilms with our dogs....google it.

It is sexually transmitted.  Treat yourself, treat partner with higher dosage at same time, clean sex toys, wear condoms for 3 months RELIGIOUSLY.
If you get it back after unprotected sex with partner....well, I'd ask my partner.

BV can be caused by Garnerella, Mobiluncus, Bacteriodes, strep, etc
Differerent bacterias need different antibiotics.
Perhaps you also need to clean any sex toys.

You both need to be treated at the same time.  You might need 3x day(for male) instead of 2xday(for female)
Trust me, been there, done that.....
with all those antibiotics, you'll likely both need antifungal treatment too.

I got Gardnella in fall 2010 after having sex with my new boyfriend. Incidentally, the woman he ws with before me had BV. He was married to her  for 13 years. He's  a carrier. I have taken antibiotics and natural remedies and it would clear up for a month or two then I would have sex with him and it would come back. I am positive its him because we dont see each other very often and the symptoms usually start within a few days  after intercourse. He took antibiotics too but that didnt  help. One thing that worked is he would soak his penis in hydrogen peroxide for 20 min before intercourse and I would douche with the same afterwards. Tell me about taking the spontineity out of our sex life. BV may not be the classic textbook STD but I am convinced that is how I got it. Some women are carriers and have no symptoms. It has to do with your PH.
Here's a remedy that worked for me. Douche every morning and every night with hydrogen peroxide. Insert a boric acid capsule before bed. Do this 14 days. Insert a capsule everynight of your period and when you have intercourse. Once you have BV, Symptoms are triggered by Anything that changes the PH of your vagina, such as period, sperm, condoms, or just friction from sex.. I douche with peroxide after sex also. Take probiotics everyday whether you have symptoms or not.

For guys who are positive and your partner has no symptoms then you have nothing to worry about. Most men who are positive are uncircumcized. Take probiotics, soak with hydrogen peroxide twice daily for a week(retract foreskin), drink 100% cranberry juice. Here is the hard part. No sex during treatment period. You can test false negative for BV. I tested negative 6 months ago while I was in the peak of my symptoms. I could tell from the itching, burning, discharge and the Fishy odor that it was Gardnerella but my test came back negative.

No, if they cultured the urine they'd find whatever it is then.

Thanks, Amazingly, she just got it again, and we had no sex. So I am thinking the something is causing a ph balance change and errupting the infection. Her doctor prescbribed some other medicine, and she is washing with some kind of femine wash prescribed by her doctor. I hope this new medication takes care of it.

Also, kind of test could I request for verifiying I am not the host of this Infection? Ive done urine test but I dont know if they are looking for it. Do I need a swab test?

I think it might be a possibility, but its a low chance.  You've already had all the tests you can.

The other thing I'd check is what is your partner doing right after sex that might be contributing?  Is she using either feminine or baby wipes to clean up?  Those are notorious for causing bacterial vaginitis (which is what gardnerella is).  Is she using some kind of feminine wash?   Is she doing anything that might upset the delicate pH balance?

Yes, both times they tested urine was same day while the visit, althought the first time that I requested STD, doc said he was going to see if it had any growth of anything withing 3 days. came neg.

What do you suggest the most accurate test a male should have done in my case, when a sex partner continues to get gardnerella right after sex? Do you think I am carrying the infection as a host?

If your urine test was ok - did they culture it and send it to the lab or did you get results that same visit? - then you've had all the testing you need.

I'd suggest that you both take the meds and see how that goes.

I am male, and my wife keeps getting Gardnerella, I go and get std and urine testing and everything comes out ok, My wife has been treated now 4 times and keeps getting it four days after having sex. Her Gyn suggested that both of us get treated with 7 days of Metrodinzole, So my question is can I be carrying something that cause the recurrence? and if so, what is the appropriate request for testing to make sure I dont have something that is causing it. I dont seem to have any symtpoms, I went to a urologist and generl Practice doctor and both said my urine tested healthy. I have frequent urinating problems and sometimes burning sensation but no discharge of any kind. Any suggestions I would like to hear.

Dear Melissa,  There is a connection to your menstrual cycle and the propensity to get vaginal infections!  The pH balance of the vagina fluctuates during the cycle and is the least acidic on the days just prior to and during menstruation. Infections, therefore, are most common at this time. I had a problem for years of getting a new yeast infection every month and not one doctor told me about the connection. ( I had to find the connection on the internet.)  The medical community's ignorance caused me a lot of distress as I became very tired of being told to void after intercourse and wipe front to back when I was already consistently doing these things.  You might consider taking cranberry capsules or drinking cranberry juice right before, during and after your cycle.  This seemed to help me.  Now, thank God, I am menopausal and don't have to deal with this any more!  At any rate, keep going to a new doctor until you find one who is knowledgeable, doesn't try to make you feel ashamed, who will listen to you and who takes you seriously.  Those types of GYN doctors must be out there somewhere.  Best wishes and don't give up!

I meant no offense by giving you those suggestions.  I am always amazed at women who chronically have bv that haven't done any research, so I mentioned them, just in case.

GracefromHHP (the community leader on the herpes forum) battles this constantly, and has found that femdophilous really works for her - its the only thing that does.

Good luck,

Hi AJ,

Being that I have had this for over 7 years I have done much research on the problem.  I do all of the right things, use the correct products for down there and still, month after month it comes back right after my cycle.  Having sex or not having sex, it doesn't matter.  The older doctor that I started seeing told me that when he first started his practice (he was about 70), there was no such thing as BV and they have no clue as to why someone like me has it chronically.  I have found other boards where people are having the same problem.  My first doctor told me it was an std and after a year of seeing him was actually angry with me that I was still getting  bv.
I did change my diet for about a year, no red meat, total fruit and veggie, juicing, no alcohol, etc.  Nothing changed.  Sometimes you just want to throw your hands up.  I personally think it has to do with our environment and the things that are put in and on our foods.  The only option there is growing everything at home.  It doesn't effect everyone chronically but for some of us it does.  I never thought I would be one of the ones that it does.  I can remember reading posts 7 years ago of people who said that they had bv for a few years and I remember telling myself that there was no way I could live like that and that it wouldn't be me.  Well, here I am 7 years later and its me.

Oh and to say this is an std is misleading.  For some reason, still unknown, women who have had sex get bv at far greater rates than those who haven't.

Melissa -

You have probably done this, but in case you haven't, you should look at what you are using that might be contributing.

Are you using any feminine or baby wipes, scented soaps or laundry detergents, wearing  undies that are not 100% cotton, using some kind of cream to shave the area, take birth control pills or use some other form of hormonal contraception, etc.?

There is also a product called femdophilous that you can use.  Its a probiotic, and unlike many others, it colonizes in the urogential tract.  You can find it at www.jarrow.com or at your local Whole Foods, etc.

I'm sorry you are dealing with this.  BV is a pain.

It was actually nice to see your post.  I have had BV which is the same thing for over 7 years.  I can take the antibiotics and creams and nothing works, it comes back month after month.  I have had a doctor tell me this is a STD, I must disagree as even if I do not have sex it comes back.

I agree.

Be sure to include how you were tested for this.

I think this would be a good question to ask HHH/EWH over on the std expert list if you don't mind paying.

Hello, I have similar problem i.e. I (man, 30 years) was tested positive on Gardnerella however my wife's test was negative?! Strange...How could that possibly be?

Is there any other non-sexual way which could potentially be the reason for my infection with this bacteria?

Appreciate comments.
