Geographic Tongue

Hello,

To sum up my story 41/2 months ago I hooked up with with a girl and shortly after developed a white tongue and a flu.  It went to a number of doctors including primary care physician, dentist, ent, and gi and was first diagnosed as having thrush and later coated tongue and finally geographic tongue which I believe seems to be the correct answer.  I have been tested for all STD's all of which came back negative, but after 41/2 months I still have geographic tongue.  I have posted in the STD section because although research on geographic tongue says the cause is not fully understood I notice a lot of people on this site including myself seem to get it after a sexual encounter.  Most people unfortunately post under the HIV section and the only answers are usually that it is not HIV and there is no real discussion about what causes the geographic tongue and if it goes away.

I guess I would like to direct my question to anyone who has developed geographic tongue after a sexual encounter and ask them the following:

1.  Have you given it to anyone else?  (I ask because most research I have done and doctors that I have talked to say that it is not contagious yet it seems a lot of people coincidentally get it after a sexual encounter so I am wondering if they have given to anyone else because I have been worried to hook up with anyone new since this has happened)

2.  Has it gone away and if so after how long?

3.  Besides not eating spicy food, is there anything that can be done to help it.

Thanks in advance for any help!

About 99.9% of the people who post here do not hang around to answer questions or read other posts.

My advice is to follow up with your Dr.

I never had geographica tounge. My ex had it- I always thought it was weird. We broke up and after being together for over a year started getting it myself several months later.

Geographical tounge usually appears during childhood- I was 24-25 years old at the time. Maybe there is a look-alike out there?

There may or may not be a coorilation- but I wish it would go away.  I believe it to have come from him- or from the HPV vaccine I recieved. I think more research needs to be done on this subject.

I found this forum because I was searching for a link between geographic tongue and STDs.

About 4 months ago I performed unprotected oral sex on a new sexual partner. Less than 2 weeks later, I discovered my tongue was coated white. The symptoms seemed to match geographic tongue but I was initially diagnosed with oral herpes. I believed this diagnosis to be correct because I had recently learned my partner sometimes had cold sores.

When the "outbreak" did not go away, I received a second diagnosis----oral thrush. I took medication daily but still the condition remained.

I developed an oral infection which the dentist says was perodontitis. She also diagnosed my tongue. She said the condition was "geographic tongue" and that it was benign. I'm still skeptical.

It's been 4 months and still my tongue has not returned to it's previous condition before the sexual encounter. I don't know what this is but spicy food does seem to make it worse and vitamin B helps SOMETIMES.

Tongue problems can be signs of many things. The red spots that sometimes come under geographic tongue, are usually a sign of infection. Your tongue is a mucous membrane, just like other mucous membranes of the body such as the urethra. When you get red spots and sores on the tongue it can be a sign of infection of the mucous membranes. Also the scalloping that can occur on the sides of the tongue can be from tongue swelling that also occurs with infection. The color of the tongue is important also. A dark purpilish tint to the tongue could be a sign of oxygenation issues in the body. Your tongue can tell you alot about your overall health, as well as hands and feet and nails.

I'm 13 and I'm a girl and I have a geographic tongue so having sex may not be the reason why your tongue is like that
