How long does it take to cure?

About a week ago I started to feel a strong burning itch inside my urethra and on my glans and foreskin. This developed into burning pain while urinating and a more frequent need to do so, and I started to have a yellow discharge, thick at first, then less so. My partner developed a sore throat in the mean time (we had unprotected oral sex). The doctor we saw diagnosed almost certain gonorrhea and perscribed ciprofloxacin 500mg in one go to be repeated 24hrs later. Also gave us Zithromax 1g in one go, for three days, to cover chlamydia. 20 hours after the first medicine, however, my penis still burns when peeing and the tip is very red round the opening (wasn't before...).Should the symptoms have gone by now? How long does the medicine take to work? Or could the diagnose be wrong?

I know that every minute feels like a lifetime with this. I was diagnosed with gonorrhea on mon. 16 2009...never before had an STD...I hav tried to educate myself quickly on the subject, and even though our circumstances are different, I do know that it does sound like the right diagnosis, and it takes several days, a week for some real symptom relief... This part will be the hardest, even if symptoms have gone away, NO sex for a minimum of two weeks to be sure the bacteria is gone. Hope this helps.

It can take up to 2 weeks for all symptoms to stop. Normally after 2-3 days symptoms start to decrease.
Could you have been misdiagnosed...possible unless a test was done. But I would guess that this would be gonorrhea from the symptoms.
