Incurable Ureaplasma?

I am a 27 year old female and I have been in a 1 year exclusive relationship with my boyfriend. A couple of months ago he started complaining of pain while urinating so we both were tested for chlamydia and gonorrhea and the tests came back negative.

A week later I went to my gynecologist who ordered some more tests and came back positive for ureaplasma urealyticum. The doctor prescribed azithromycin and two and a half weeks weeks after finishing the treatment, a new test for ureaplasma came back positive again.

My doctor ordered a basic antibiogram and it turns out that it has resistance for:  tetracycline, doxycycline, erythromycin, azithromycin, levofloxacin, moxifloxacin and clindamycin.

My doctor said she was going to order a more extended antibiogram. Now, I am really scared that it could be resistant to all antibiotics.

Could urealpasma be resistant to ALL antibiotics? What do you do in that case?

you're entering a very grey area in terms of treatment options and availability.  The antibiotics you have listed are the primary treatment options and the most effective medications against UU.  UU that is antimicrobial resistant happens in a small number of cases and the course of treatment is not well defined.  There are a few options to explore, one being IV antimicrobial therapy, but from what I've read it's hit or miss.  I would recommend you continue to follow up with your gyn and also pay a visit to an infectious disease specialist to discuss your options.

Do you or your partner still have symptoms after Azithromycin treatment?  About 40% - 50% of sexually active adults have UU in the genital tract, but not everyone has symptoms and the presence of UU doesn't mean you will have long term health problems.  Treatment is typically provided if symptoms occur.  So I'm wondering if either of you are continuing to have symptoms at this point.  If not, then maybe no further action is required, except perhaps some monitoring for yourself with periodic appointments to your gyn.  Let us know the results of your current antibiogram study.

I ended up taking Pristamycin it’s the only antibiotic that killed it. A infectious disease dr prescribed it.

so I took 5.5grams of azythromycine - over 10 days - it nearly went away - then came back -  i guess my ureaplasma needs an even longer course of antibiotics. This is crazy, the doctor did not believe me till i returned with a positive test...7 years later!!! i may have advanced ureaplasma now, and i cannot get rid of it it is persistent to doxycycline, erythromycine, azithromycine, lymecycline, moxifloxacin, nothing worked! :(

Even though a bacteria is " resistant" to a antibiotic it does not always mean that it's is immune completely from it. I've read many articles where people had infections and just had to be treated for longer with the antibiotic. 1 gram of azithro might have not done it but if you did 4 grams over a period of 3 weeks like how they treat bacterial prostitis it might work. There's a reason why they say the bacteria is resistant but don't use the word immune sometimes you just have to give it a bigger punch.

Thank you for your answer.

My gyn said that after the extended antibiogram, if it is still resistant  the next step is to refer me with an infectologist. I just hope that step wont be necessary.

Regarding the symptoms, after the treatment with Azithromycin, the pain while urinating of my partner went away but since the bacteria still in there we are concerned that it could come back.

We are also concerned about the idea of having a baby since this could affect the pregnancy or harm the baby.
