Penis Discharge Stopped by Itself and Herpes Question

Over 20 years ago I had unprotected sex with a woman, and within a few days had a yellow/green discharge from my penis. I was young and stupid, so put off doing anything for a week or so, and it stopped. It was pre-internet, I was a scared and embarrassed teenager, so ended up not doing anything about it. The symptoms never returned, I never went to see a doctor, and I've now been married and having unprotected sex for 20 years with my wife and she has never had any symptoms. So if it was an STD, what are the chances that it resolved itself and never caused an issue with my wife?

Second question, my wife has herpes, and has since we got together. I've never had any sores on my penis. Is it possible that so long as she has been careful and we only had sex when she wasn't having an outbreak that I don't have herpes? I'm actually going to get tested for both this week, just trying to get thoughts in advance on what I should be expecting those results to be.

Thanks - that's about what I figured. She is HSV2.

I'm sorry to hear you have gone all these years with persisting worry about this. Happily, it wasn't necessary. There is no way you are still infected, and no realistic chance you infected your wife or other partners.

Probably you had gonorrhea, with a lesser chance of chlamydia or nongonococcal urethritis (NGU). These are cured by the immune system within a few weeks or months, without treatment. That's what happened here.

Many couples go through an entire marriage, with regular unprotected sex, without herpes being transmitted from one partner to the other. Or you might have been infected, without symptoms. Getting tested is a good idea, probably around a 50:50 chance your test will be positive for the same type as your wife's infection (HSV1 or HSV2).
