Recurrent NGU

I have had NGU going on 6 months now. I have taken varios antibiotocs and they seem to work but the NGU returns. Symptoms include urethral pain (burning) not always with urination, white discharge in the mornings while on antibiotics and yellow/cream discharge when off. I have been on and off Doxy, the longest was for 1 month and more recently (the last round) was 4 weeks ago which I had taken doxy for 2 weeks and Metronidozole for the 2nd week with the doxy. I never got rid of the clear discharge in the morning but everything else subsided. I in fact thought I had been cured. 4 weeks later, I have the pain and now yellow/creamish discharge again. My Urologist is out of ideas and has refferred me to an infectious diseases specialist. I have had all std tests and all come back negative including gonnerhea, chlamydia, HIV, herpes, etc. Originally, in March I was diagnosed with having an E. coli infection which cleared up after taking Cipro. A few weeks after I developed the NGU. I acquired this in Asia back in February of this year. Has anyone had any success with these recurring NGU's??? I am at my wits end. Could this be a resistant bacteria? Can being on and off and then on again with the Doxycycline be making the bacteria resistant? Was the 7 days of doxy and metrodinazole combo enough days. I figure if the antibiotics seem to work it is only a matter of taking for longer periods, is this correct? I have heard that metronidazole is the last resort with these types of infections but is not recomended for extended period of time. Has anyone taken metronidazole. I am married and working this out with my wife. We are not active now and haven't been since this came about. Can anyone help????

Are you similar with cases like mine that have lasted 6 months or more that have eventually resolved? How and how long?

Last question!

no I wouldn't stop the antibiotics at all.

Thanks grace but it seems my urologist is stumped because he finds no bacteria and as he understands most ngu is delt with metrodinozole. You are right in that he only finds a high amount of white blood cell count and can see puss in my urine. As I mentioned, the infection returned and am back on doxy but it seems to be working slower than before. I am worried that because I get on and off it, te bacteria is becoming resistant. Should I stop the antibiotics. I have read that it can lead to infertility and other issues. I am already afraid that it has caused damage. I am also worried it has spread to my semen and my wife and I want more children. To answer your earlier question, we are not using counseling but we are doing well and are working things out on our own for now.

you'd have to pay to start a new post on their forum.

yes you will get rid of this - sometimes just takes awhile to shake whatever is causing the inflammation :(

not sure an infectious disease specialist is the best follow up. perhaps seek out the opinion of a different urologist if yours is stumped.

Grace, also, how do I restart the string with the doctor from my previous post. I don't mind paying the fee again but how is it done? Thanks!

Thanks Grace but will this ever go away? HPV seems unlikely to me since the symptoms are not what I am experiencing. I am back on doxy as I await my appointment with the infectious disease specialist. If you do not believe that the metro would not treat what I have, what possibly coul dit be?Will I ever get rid of this?

you tried to add to your prior post on the std experts forum. too much time had passed since your original question so it was bumped over to here.

you can take the metronidazole for long periods of time but it's not likely that the bacteria it treats is causing your symptoms.

it sounds like your urologist is doing a good job. unfortunately sometimes getting rid of persistent ngu is hard to do :(   they aren't finding bacteria, just increased white cells so it's not likely this is a resistant bacterial infection.

at this point, enough time has passed that whatever is going on, it's not a std from the encounter you had. you and your wife can resume sex if it's not painful for you to ejaculate. I'd wear a condom yet though since you can't rule out hpv infection ( though the risk of that from a one time encounter is rather low ).  probably the peace of mind of a condom would help you both too.

are you both going to relationship counseling to help you work past this?
