The background:
I believe I caught it from a brief encounter where there was vaginal insertion. We both wised up, but certainly it was too late. This was the 3rd week of May. By the end of June into the beginning of July I developed symptoms. There was a bit of burning during urination, a clear but very liquid like discharge, frequent urination, and some inflammation in the pelvis area. I went to the doctor and my tests for Chylmadia, Gon, Syphillis, HIV were all negative. I was diagnosed with NGU and given a 7 day treatment of Doxycyline. However, I took the first pill that evening and I woke up around 5 AM the next morning because my head was itching terribly. I also had minor itching on my chest and other parts of my body. It was most intense, though, in the genital region. There was burning and itching but no visible sign of irritation. It subsided by the end of the day. I had called the doctor at the county health department and they said, event hough it is rare and I had been on a drug int he tetracyclin family before, it sounded like an allergic reaction. I discontinued the medicine but had to wait 4 days before the clinic was open again.
I received one dose Zithromax. By the end of the week, symptoms were all gone. Then 2 days later, they returned, without the inflammation in the pelvis area or the burning during urination. The sensation to urinate frequently was about the same and there was also a discharge again. I returned to the doctor and there was no sign of bacteria and they said it can take some time to heal - that there is probably scar tissue in there - and give it 4 weeks. The symptoms did go away right near the end of the 4 weeks. This is Mid August, now.
At the end of September, NGU returned. I was back with an ex-girlfriend of mine after a break in a previous 5 year relationship. She had been recently tested because I told her of the situaton just to be safe. She was clean. Sadly, I couldn't find out about the other partner where I think i contracted it from. My girlfriend gave me unprotected oral. That is when the NGU returned. The symptoms were extremely minor. An urge to urinate more frequently and a little bit of discharge that was not nearly as bothersome as the previous time. I received Zithromax again. It went away within a couple days, flared back up for a day or two, and then disappeared. My girlfriend was retested and was clean. I was retested and also clean - except for the NGU. The doctor said there was an off chance it was Trich.
I moved across the country, shortly thereafter. I haven't had any sexual contact since the last episode. At the beginning of December, the symptoms returned. I was really confused now. Went to the health department. they didn't do an immediate gram stain. I am waiting on the 2 week urine test, but there really is not much point since there is no way it is what they are testing me for (Chy, gon, Syph, HIV). This doctor mentioned Trich also and went ahead and gave me a single dose metronidazole - 4 pills.
It has only been a few days but I guess I am wondering:
1) If it is only NGU, will metronidazole clear up the infection?
2) My big concern, and maybe I read too much on the internet, is Herpes. I am worried that the burning and itching I had for a day during my first bout of NGU was not an allergic reaction or a fungal infection, as they suggested. Is it possible that the recurrent NGU is in fact Herpes breakout that have become less severe than the first? I have no signs of sores, the doctors brushed off such a suggestion, also. But from what i read, herpes is often asymptomatic, and it is possible that my breakouts are confined to the urethra, thus causing the irritation. I am maybe being paranoid, but it's one of the things that I haven't been tested for - the free health clinic didn't want to and i don't have health insurance right now.
3) If it is not sexually related, what are some other possible culprits? I know prostatis is one, and if so, will metronidazole help that out? I am having a family friend who works at a hospital pull some strings so that i can at least talk to a urologist about other possibilities and whether Ineed to find a way to get tested for some alternative stuff.
Sorry for the long read, it's been a long, frustrating journey though.
