Redo Herpes Select test?

Dr. I have been a herpaphobic forever and have several questions. As you have read I was diagnosed recently with hsv 2 after having the Select blood test. I have had redness, itching, swelling and skin tears with and without these other symptoms for years off and on. I was suspicious of Herpes for yrs even though my Doctors were not. Anyway, now I find out my nightmere is a reality. My question is Why doesn't my husband have hsv 2 since I have been with him for over 14 yrs? Also he has type 1, thanks to his mom, and I don't. I am of course, careful not to kiss him if he has a cold sore or feels one coming on. I basically am upset by all of this, my long term fear, recent diagnosis, etc. I am taking Acyclovir by the way. Do you feel I could have had a false pos test. I really don't think so as what would be the cause of my irritations then? Should I repeat the test? If nothing else then for my peice of mind? Just really need to know. Thanks, EB

This isn't HHH's board - if you want his comments then you need to post on his board ( and pay ).

If you need the peace of mind then get retested.  Find out which test you had done the first time - it might've been the herpes select immunoblot ( you said it only reported back with a +  though call your doctor to confirm that there wasn't a numerical result with it ).  If it was the herpes select immunoblot then it's likely to be pretty darn accurate.

So why if you contracted hsv2 before you met your hubby doesn't he have it too?  It's really not as easy to transmit as folks think it is. Even if you just avoided sex naturally anytime you thought something was going on down yonder ( no sweetie not tonight I"m still too sore from vacation last week or no not tonight I think I might have a yeast infection etc ) his risk is very low. It's almost as much about bad luck as anything when it comes to contracting genital herpes.

thanks. No, he doesn't have it and counting dating time, we have been together closer to 15 yrs. You are right, I was probably irritated and we just didn't do it then and he got lucky. He has hsv 1 and I have gotten lucky as I don't have that. He gets cold sores. I don't. Ya, I thought I was posting to the doc. Guess I have a lot to learn as it didn't go through to him. thanks so much for your help though. It has been very helpful!! Thanks, EB

As far as My NP told me, it was just the Herpes Select and very accurate. No numbers highs, lows, etc. just pos or neg.
