Rough white spot on tongue

A few weeks ago I started feeling a strange sensation on my tongue, I thought it was a bump but every time I would examine it with my finger I'd feel nothing. But finally today I looked in the mirror and I see that there seem to be three white spots on my tongue- not raised, they look like they are within the normal skin level. But, on the one area that I had the strange sensation it feels like the in that spot the tongue has become more "rough" as if the taste buds are burned or something. (this has been this way for a while as I said and I am planning on seeing a doctor this week)

It is not painful, just strange feeling as If something is stuck on my tongue that I need to scrape off but can't

Any ideas?

Did anything come of your visit?  I experienced the same thing a few weeks ago, and it's been pretty persistent, on and off, though ...
