Syphilis and pregnancy

Hello, I am currently pregnant after a miscarriage in May, I am also positive for syphilis. In October of last year I had a case of Bell's palsy and the nueroligist found that I had syphilis. I had an original titer of 1:32 when the nueroligist screened me, I went to the clinic (with no prior treatment) and my titer was 1:16 I took the 3 rounds of penicillin. My titer has not decreased from 1:32 since last year according to this clinic I went to an infectious disease doctor and he did not draw any labs but gave me a month supply of Doxy 100mg 2x a day for 30 days. I did not get to complete it because I became pregnant. When the obgyn drew blood my titer was at 1:8 according to them but still 1:32 at the clinic, I'm confused why the titers are different and I'm not sure which one to go by. Also if I had untreated neurosyphilis would I see a decrease in my titer just by having the standard syphilis treatment? They don't seem to think I have nuerosyphilis but the Bell's palsy makes me think otherwise plus I'm pregnant and they are just kind of brushing it off. I can't help but to think my miscarriage had something to do with the syphilis.

All I can suggest is that you contact the ID doctor (or make a follow-up appointment) with him and ask for a clear explanation. It is your right to have a clear explanation in terms you understand.

Yeah, I did go to an infectious disease doctor after my titers didn't drop and he drew no blood but put me on the doxy, then I got pregnant and my titer was 1:8 at the prenatal clinic but when I went to the clinic it was still reading at 1:32 they drew it multiple times obgyn 1:8 every time clinic 1:32 everytime. It's so stressful and confusing. I'm calling my obgyn on Monday since I'm pregnant again I'd hate to risk another miscarriage if in fact the syphilis did have something to do with my recent loss. So if the obgyn test is correct and the titer is in fact 1:8 then nuerosyphilis isn't likely?

"Don't think" you have neurosyphilis doesn't sound adequate to me. I would think you need a spinal tap to know for certain, since NS is a common reason RPR (or VDRL) titers don't decline with standard treatment. And although Bell's palsy isn't usually due to NS, it certainly is a possibility.

If you haven't seen an infectious diseases specialist, that would be a logical step at this point. Good luck.
