Unprotected sex...and a long list of strange symptoms...

Hello Doctor,

Here's my story:

On November 29, 2008 (2 months ago) I had drunk unprotected (and extremely rough) oral and vaginal sex with a complete stranger. It was stupid, dangerous, and completely out of character.I should probably mention that I had taken a tampon out to have sex and then put another back in afterwards (stupid, I know...never been that drunk but what's done is done). Since then I have been extremely stressed.

December 2- I went to my GP to get tested for STD's. I did a urine sample for chlamydia and gonorrhea--both negative. A couple days later, I felt a little irritated around my vagina and went to a walk-in clinic. The doctor said it looked like a mild yeast infection. He gave me an anti-fungal cream.

December 8th- I was still paranoid so I went to an STD clinic about a week after the incident. This doctor said it was definitely not a yeast infection because there was no discharge. She noticed a red irritation south of my vagina and said it looked like trauma. She took swabs for chlamydia, gonorrhea, trich, as well as swabbed the "trauma" for herpes--all came back negative.

December 18th- I had been experiencing severe pain in my vagina as well as abdominal pains. My GP diagnosed me with a severe yeast infection and stated it was the worse that she had ever seen. My vagina was throbbing with pain and the skin around the vaginal opening had turned completely white...but no discharge. She prescribed me diflucan (anti-fungal) and the same cream the walk-in-clinic doc gave me and told me to purchase a 7 day monistat package. I complied. My GP also diagnosed me with tonsillitis this day and swabbed my tonsils for strep (came back negative).

December 28th- I woke up one morning to find a burst of clear fluid in my underwear (nothing I had ever experienced before). I called my doctor and she said it was nothing to worry about and that it was probably a reaction to yeast treatment.

January 1st- The pain from the "yeast infection" had improved dramatically up until now. On New Year's Eve, I drank a lot of beer and woke up to a sore, "bruised" feeling in my buttocks. The pain felt deep within the skin and it hurt to sit and lay down, and just move in general.

January 9th- I had a pap smear and explained to my GP about New Year's. I pointed out bumps that I had noticed long before the incident of November 29th and she diagnosed it as molloscum. She sprayed them with liquid nitrogen and prescribed me more anti-fungal cream and told me to get more monistat for the "yeast infection" that had returned.

January 16th- The cream was easing the irritation but I had found that every time I drank alcohol the pain would come back. The same bruising in buttocks pain.... every time I drank alcohol (once a weekend). I went back to my GP and told her things weren't getting better. She found it strange and gave me two more creams. Both the same anti-fungal cream she and the walk-in-clinic doctor gave me but one had a steroid in it to ease the inflammation. I should mention that at this point the skin around my vaginal opening was still white.

My doctor prescribed me an anti-depressant and anti-anxiety because at this point I was so upset with myself (the event that caused this) and my symptoms that would not go away. I had been constanting looking up symptoms online and very paranoid that herpes was the culprit for a number of reasons.

1) herpes and yeast infection are often misdiagnosed.
2) herpes can cause tonsillitis
3) the burst of clear fluid is often associated with herpes

My GP insisted that herpes was/is not the problem.

January 23rd- Went back to GP, as I noticed a blemish (a pimple) that was located around my pubic area. It was about an half an inch away from where pubic hair grows and located in the fold between my leg and groin (where my underwear kind of digs in? if that makes sense). She sprayed it to see if it would react like molloscum and she said it did not which meant it was probably an ingrown hair.

January 29th- After noticing the pimple pop up then disappear then dry up (kind of flake-like), then pop up again, then down, then 2 pop up then down... the blemish subdided. The "yeast infection" was completely cleared. No vaginal pain. I still noticed buttocks pain when I drink alcohol and I have began to feel sciatic like pain in my back, buttocks and legs.

Today, February 1st.- I still feel sciatic like pain. I notice it most when I sit for long periods of time. The other night in bed I had to turn over on my side due to the pain and could feel the particular spot throbbing. My bum always feels sore (it has all this time but the REAL pain comes and goes). I also noticed a pain that felt like someone was grabbing my thigh and squeezing it.

Also, last night I had a dizzy spell. I was tossing and turning and each time I lifted my head from my pillow I felt as if I was experiencing the spins (when drunk)... .or vertigo?? It was nothing I had ever felt before. I was researching online and found something called labyrinthitis that sounds similar.

Now I am convinced this is herpes. Although I have not experienced sores, I have done research online and found stories of people with HSV that experience similar symptoms with or without the typical blisters.

I took an IGG blood type specific test that detects both HSV 1 and 2 last Monday (January 28th) and now I'm currently waiting for the results.

I asked my GP to refer me to a gyn. This gyn denied my referral but faxed over two other doctors that were "better suited for my problem". One out of the two doctors accepted my case and booked me an appointment for May 11th but I can't wait that long!

I'm going back to the STD clinic on Tuesday (2 days) to PRESS my case and get some ANSWERS.

What do you think? Sorry for the long post:(

Hi Confused,

Would you mind telling me what the results of all of this is? I have experienced somewhat similar symptoms and like you, have yet to receive an actual diagnosis.

Really - try some ice packs or a back of frozen peas.  It really does help.

I'm sorry you didn't get any new info.

So I went to the STD clinic (a new one) and got the same doctor from the previous one I visited (I guess she makes rounds in the area). Anyways she didn't remember me but I reminded her of our last visit and everything that has happened since.

She did more swabs. She said it looked red and sore.  She saw no lumps or bumps. I showed her what was left of my pimple and she said whatever it was was cured? She was stumped as to why alcohol was causing pain. She even left the room to ask her employees if they heard of such athing and they did not. She says she doesn't think it's herpes because herpes comes and goes...doesn't just stick around. Howevever, I'm a little skeptical about this answer because if this was my first exposure to the virus then wouldn't the outbreak be prolonged and severe (which it is)?

She told me to wait until my blood test results came back and we would go from there.

So once again, I lay here in pain...waiting for an answer.

LOL its ok.  I deleted the duplicates.

I don't know about stress bringing on all the symptoms, but stress can certainly exacerbate symptoms.

I think you either need to stay with the clinic, or with your GP.  If the clinic is good, stick with it, as they tend to do better with std stuff.  If its a chronic yeast thing, then your GP might be better.  It might also be time to see a GYN.

The lab technician said the results would take up to 18 days (business days I'm guessing). This means I should expect them no later than February 19th. **By the way I made a typo: I meant to say I took the test January 26th, not 28th).** Anyways, apparently results are most accurate 3 months after possible exposure and I took the test about 2 months after so if results are negative, I plan on taking the test again.

A family friend who has been a nurse in sexual health for over 10 years says that I should totally rule out herpes and that my symptoms are most likely brought on by stress. What do you think?

I go to the clinic tomorrow but I'm wondering if you've heard of any herpes cases that are similar?

Thank you for the reply by the way.

Did they tell you when your results for herpes would be back?  I can see why your mind went there.  It doesn't sound totally typical of herpes, but its good to at least rule it out.

If its going to be awhile for your results to come back, go to the clinic.  If they'll be back within the week, wait and see what the results say.  If they are positive, ask for antivirals.
