dry, itchy vaginal skin,

I am 24 years old, and sexually active. I had unprotected sex with my boyfriend 2 months ago. Recently, the skin all around my vagina has become very dry, and itchy, especially near the perineum. I’ve always had some dry skin in the area, but it has gotten exponentially worse. I don’t know if this to do with an STD, or more in relation to the change in weather. (I’m prone to dry skin, and the heater and winter conditions do not help.) The itching and dryness go away, temporarily, with the application of Vagisil. I’ve gone through my routine, attempting to determine if a change in soap or detergent could be the cause, but it doesn’t appear to be. I’ve started to notice some broken skin, which I believe is due to scratching and general dryness. I’m also wondering if it might be my birth control (Ortho Novum 1/50). I’ve recently done some research on it and what I’m finding seems to indicate that it’s a stronger dosage than average. I have an appointment with a gynecologist, but I would like some information, and perhaps a little reassurance, in the meantime.

Sometimes women have an odor with bv but not always.  50% of women who have bv have no symptoms whatsoever.

If you have chronic dry skin issues genitally, it's time to address them.  You are more vulnerable to all sorts of infections if you don't.  You can try something like zinc oxide or even plain ole vaseline but it's probably best if you follow up on this with your gyn or a dermatologist to come up with a better treatment plan. You might need topical estrogen to apply or even a further work up to make sure it's not something more serious going on that needs more extensive treatment. Make sense?

Last question; I don't want to be a bother. But isn't bacterial vaginitis associated with a fishy odor?

Well, stressing isn't going to do a bit of good, and it won't help you get any answers.

I've had yeast infections before, and this has some of the symptoms, but the dry skin throws me. I'm probably not making it any better by stressing non stop about it, but I can't help it.

I'd doubt its an std, but you still should test for those.

Its good that you are trying to rule out allergic causes.  That will help the doctor.  I'd wonder if its bacterial vaginitis or yeast.
