symptoms after chlamydia treatment
my girlfriend and i both took 4x250mg azithromycin to treat chlamydia 15 days ago. we waited 10 days (recommended was 7) before resuming sexual intercourse (unprotected). i had mild burning in the penis before taking the medication and still have mild burning, and now some slight pain in the lower abdomen. retesting is booked for 15 days from now. i am wondering if these symptoms are normal post medication or if the medication hasn't worked? how long should i give it before seeing a doctor again?
Hi Vance, I have some more information to share in the hope that it might give you more clues to what might be up/how I should approach the situation moving forward. My girlfriend and I are in a different country so seeking medical attention is quite expensive/difficult.
In addition to my lower abdominal pains, i am still experiencing mild burning sensation in the tip of my penis and also quite strongly in the last couple of days in the testicles. After sex with my girlfriend there is a dark grey discharge that we haven't seen (not a lot, but noticeable enough) appear after intercourse.
This is 17 days after taking the azithromycin. I am really hoping it's a complication or something as a result of the chlamydia infection and the chlamydial infection now gone which I would prefer because the STD label on a condition is damaging to our relationship on a mental level. However, I feel strongly that this is a case of the antibiotics not working and me (and through reinfection probably my girlfriend) still having chlamydia.
Would you recommend seeing the doctor and trying to seek further antibiotics before the retest, or would you recommend staying patient and waiting for the retest.

Sex before taking meds is fine and eating after is fine. It is not recommended to retest anymore but people are dumb and do get reinfected.

I've been doing plenty of reading on this forum and stumbled upon this from Dr. Handsfield in 2008.
"Retesting is recommended at 3 months. It's not primarily to detect treatment failure, which is rare, but is recommended because 10-20% of people get reinfected within the next few months."
Does this apply to a monogamous relationship? Is that information still accurate 7 years on? I am firstly very hopeful that the azithromycin worked but extremely worried that it didn't given the symptoms, but I am very wary of reinfection and having to go through this with my girlfriend all over again.
Maybe you could further calm my worries by telling me if the treatment was effective despite a) sexual intercourse a day before taking medication and with my girlfriend not diagnosed for sure (she was given her dosage as result of my diagnosis) and b) despite eating an hour after taking the dose.
