Possible? Maybe. Likely, no. Herpes likes to infect areas like the lips, and genitals. Not so much the cheeks and eye area. While hsv infection does  occur in areas other than those mentioned it’s highly rare. I’d think it’s more likely acne or some other type of skin infection

It is spread by skin to skin contact, however many people have no symptoms but their saliva is loaded with it. A researcher told me that one co-worker was asymptomatic, but whenever they wanted active virus for analysis they swabbed her mouth.
First you should see a doc for a diagnosis to make sure that is what he has. Plus always see doc if something like that is located near the eye. It isn't easy to determine who your son could have got a skin issue from. I got impetigo which is a kid's disease twice as an adult - maybe that is what he has.

90% of people are estimated to test positive for the virus, so again if he does have it, it doesn't mean your ex was the one who passed it to him.
