FTA-ABS over 60

I am a Medical Technologist, and co workers and I have had a discussion about FTA-ABS over 60. Our currently procedure is to perform a non-treponem(RPR)  and if positive follow up with a treponem (FTA). However, if the patient is over 60, then procedure states a FTA is unnecessary. Why is this?

Okay...thanks. I been trying to read up and find it but couldnt really find anything. I was thinking that there really wasnt any treatment and the individual should be less sexually active by the age of 60......just a thought

I'm going to email this to jess - she's far better at syphilis testing questions than vance and I are!  if she doesn't answer right away, give her a day or two :)
