Gonorrhea/NGU general treatment questions

Hello,

Went to my doctor today for symptoms consistent with gonnorhea or NGU (painful urination, white discharge). My doctor said the most likely cause would be gonorrhea and chlamydia and said he'd treat me for both and let me know what my urine sample came back with.

Treatment was just an injected antibiotic (don't remember the name of it, sorry) and a single dose of two 550mg Azithromycin tablets. I was a little surprised that it was just one dose, because most of what I've read online (not always the best source of information I know) advised that treatment is normally a course of antibiotics over several days, with lots of warning to continue taking antibiotics after your symptoms go away. My doctor told me what he prescribed would "clear it up."

I suppose my main question is, is this a common treatment? Should I be worried that he only prescribed one dose and seek a second opinion? (HMO insurance, so if I do it's rather costly).

Couple other follow ups..things I probably should have asked my doctor I know...

Since it's just the one dose, how long should I wait before I seek additional help if symptoms do not subside? Or should I just wait for my urinalysis to come back and take any additional recommended steps then?

I had a negative test for Gonorrhea and chlamydia a month ago. Since then, almost all of my sexual activity been oral sex for the most part (MSM if that matters...) and I have no symptoms that would indicate an oral or throat infection...it it common at all to get gonorrhea or chlamydia from receiving oral sex? And can giving oral sex to an infected person result in an infection in the urethra rather than the throat or mouth?

Appreciate the input.

Well the first day after treatment my symptoms alleviated considerably. Still some pain with urination, but much less severe and no increased frequency to urinate. Discharge is in much smaller quantities (prior to treatment it seemed like a slow trickle for almost the entire day--now it's just a few drops every few hours) and is more clear in color. Still pain with erection, but considerably less severe.

I did some independent research and apparently the single dose of Azithromycin is the preferred treatment these days. I'm pretty confident I should be symptom free within a few days.

Sorry, one additional comment.

I didn't mention one specific symptom I had, both nights after I first discovered symptoms, I awoke with an erection with extreme pain in my urethra area, it actually prevented me from sleeping for a while. Is this a common symptom or could it indicate something else?
