Prostatitis certainly can cause pain referred to the meatus. It doesn't cause actual inflammation or irritation there. But you can be pretty sure you don't have that, given the negative dipstick.
That's my last comment. Your best bet now is to follow up with your doctor.
would the prostatitis cause irritation of the meatus?
Most prostatitis is non-infectious. Antibiotics are routinely tried in the hope they will improve symptoms, but mostly they have no effect. Prostatitis symptoms usually include bladder symptoms as well; it doesn't mean there is a separate bladder infection and you can expect your urine culture to be negative.
There is no evidence that trich causes prostatitis, but some doctors include one of the anti-trichomonas treatments (metronidazole or tinidazole) if other antibiotics don't work. Usually it has no effect, but there's probably no harm in trying.
thanks - that is helpful.
I am experiencing prostate inflammation, that is not responding to antibiotics (cipro, now on doxy).
My female partner has no signs other than some frequent urination. I was screened for all other std's, all negative.
The symptoms I have mirror bladder infection as well. waiting on urine culture - but dip test was all neg.
Any other thoughts?
Commercial DNA testing is increasingly available but not officially approved for use in men and therefore not commonly done except in special circumstances. Urine testing probably would detect most infections, however.
