Antiobiotics and urine samples

I just wonder if you could check these details for me as I cant find any help or anything similar on the forum.

In May I was on Trimethroprime antibiotics for 3 days for cystitis.  18 days later I provided a urine sample for a general bacterial culture - came back "normal, and also provided a sample for clamydia & gonorreah - came back negatative.  Would you be satisifed that 18 days clear of finishing the antiobiotics would give accurate results?

Yesterday, I visited my gynocologist for on/off mild UTI symptoms and he tooks swabs yesterday and a urine sample and said he would check me for thrush, BV, STD's etc.  This is 24 days clear of finishing the antiobiotics - would you be happy that when the results come in, they can be taken as accurate?

Thank you.

Answered in your new thread, which was unnecessary; you didn't need to spend a new posting fee.  In any case, there will be no fruther comments in either thread.  Please move on.

I've probably found the answers as I've been having a search through the posts.  I found this comment from Dr Hook:

"After a week, urine and blood tests will not be affected (in fact the blood tests will not be affected at any time)"

And I found this comment from yourself:

"Canker sores are painful, syphilis chancres are painless"

So I assume I'm OK?

Doctor, Over the weekend I've developed a mouth ulcer on the roof of my mouth.  Red, smooth and very painful - this is 8 weeks after the unprotected oral exposure.  This just got me worried about syphillis (and I've had a hundred mouth ulcers in the past but the anxiety makes me worried about this particular one)!

Would you still be happy that the negative blood test for syphilis is ok considering I had stopped the antibiotics 2 weeks prior to the blood test?  (would the antibiotics be out of the system by then and not interefer with the test).

If the antibiotic was active against gonorrhea and chlamdia -- which probably it was (most UTI antibiotics are) -- the time to testing will make no difference.  A negative result could mean either that you never were infected or that you were and the antibiotic cleared it up.  You will never know for certain.

But the chance of any STD from that exposure was nil.  If any test were to ever be possitve, it would probably be from some other exposure -- and that's for sure the case for hep B, which has never been known to be transmitted by oral sex or hand jobs.

I'm holding you to your "one more" promise.  That's all for this thread.

One more question if I may.  My situation was low risk (mutual masturbation and oral sex), however as many other posters, I had blood test for Hep B and syphilis too for peace of mind..  Both negative but taken 2 weeks after finishing antibiotics - can I trust these as being ok and no interference from the medication?  Thank you.

Thank you doctor.  I'm not sure what type of drug I was on.  Cant remember.

Can you just clarify though if enough time had passed to provide accurate samples at 17 days and the swabs at 24 - would the antibiotics be out of the system to give accurate results?  I thought that testing 2 weeks plus would be enough time.

I saw this before I replied.  It makes no difference.

Welcome to the STD forum.

Trimethoprim might interfere with testing for both gonorrhea and chlamydia.  Also, are you sure you are on trimethoprim alone?  Most of the time that drug is used in combination with a sulfa drug called sulfamethoxazole; the most common trade names for the combination of trimethoprim/sulfa are Septra or Bactrim.  If you took that combination, then the drug will not only interfere with testing, but likely would cure gonorrhea or chlamydia.  So if your STD tests are negative now, it still might be possible you were infected earlier.

Also, these drugs -- either trimethoprim alone or the combination -- don't always work against UTI ("cystitis"). Although most UTI bacteria are susceptible, some are not.  So it is possible you have continuing symptoms because your UTI is not being adequately treated.  Sometimes a drug in the fluoroquinolone class (e.g., ciprofloxacin) is necessary.

I suggest you discuss these things with your doctor or clinic. You could print out this reply as a starting point for discussion.

Good luck--  HHH, MD

Just one correction, the 18 days in the first paragraph should be 17 days (just in case it makes a difference).
