Azithromycin - How long until sex and other issues...?

1) I had unprotected sex with non-regular partner at 10:00am on May 22nd...
2) I was worried when she told me she had never had any STD tests and had unprotected sex 2 times previously
3) I told her that she should go and get tested
4) I already had tests for STDs in Jan 2008  - all negative and no other exposure
5) I wasn't showing symptons, but I self-medicated on May 26th at 10:00am with 2 x 500mg generic azithromycin. (I had bought 4 months ago from on-line generic meds store - it was shipped from India - called Azimay 500 manufactured by Akums Drugs and Pharma Ltd. Distributed by May & Baker Pharma Ltd. Mumbai. - Mfg Lic No. 5/UA/SC/P-2004 have an Exp date of 11/2009).
I had some bubbling in my Stomach 2 or 3 hours later - and a little diahorea
6) At midnight on Saturday May 31st - 5 days and 14 hours after taking the Azithromycin I had unprotected sex with my regular partner
7) Yesterday morning Wed June 4th the girl told me she had tested positive for Chlamydia
8) I went to the STD for all tests, this clinic also do a quick swab test for general Urethritus and quick HIV - after the tests they came back and said nothing showing for general Uretthritus and nothing on HIV
9) I woke up this morning, Thursday June 5th, for the first time I did see some symptons - a little white/creamy discharge - maybe due to the swab exam yesterday?
But I am worried
1) Did the self-medication work at all? Are these generic drugs "good" drugs
2) Assuming I did catch Chlymidia from her and assuming the drugs DID work - how quickly would they have taken effect - I've read that you shouldn't have sex for 7 days - well I had sex  5 days and 12 hours later... Could I have infected my partner
3) Is the fact that I had urine /blood / swab samples taken yesterday - 9 days and 5 hours after self-medicating going to cause any issues with the results...?
4) If the results come back next week that all is clear - I still have the concern about the sex after 5 1/2 days

The test results came back positive for Chlymidia...

What should I do?

Why didn't the generics that I took work?

How do I get my partner to take a test or to take some antibiotics without telling her about my situation?

Thank you for the reply - I do feel somewhat reassured but obviously the results of the test available next week will be critical...
I have not had any further discharge - and this morning when I woke the first thing I did was to check and everything looked normal - no sign of any discharge or irritation...

Self medication, no matter what it was intended to accomplish, all too often turns out to be a bad idea, compromising further evaluation.  The azithromycin you took should be in your blood for about a week, perhaps more.  As to just how long it takes to "cure" infection- there are simply no data.  We know that nearly all infections are cured at 7-10 days after taking a gram of azithromycin as you did.  Importantly however, please remember that: 1.  The majority of exposures to infected partners do not lead to infections and 2.  That even before an infected persons is cured, they become less infectious for their subsequent partners. Thus, in the situation you describe,, it is unlikely that IF you got chlamydia from your casual partner, that you transmitted it to your regular sex partner 5 days later.  The problem with all of these generalizations is that you know appear to have a discharge which could be an STD.  This being the case, the first thing you need to do is have that discharge evaluated by a trained health care provider. Then, if you have something, your partner should be treated with the same medications.  As for your questions:

1.  It should have. This could be something else or nothing at all.  See someone and get evaluated.
2.  See above.  In all likelyhood they had worked by the time you were back with your regular partner.
3.  Th swab from yesterday, the day before you noted symptoms, should be accurate. The only problem is that sometimes, even after effective treatment, fragments of dead bacteria remain which can give positive results in some tests.  Lets see what the test results show and go from there.
4.  I'm not so concerned about the sex and the symptoms yesterday.  Let us know what the tests show.  EWH
