I only had 2000 characters and I forgot that point while I was giving the play by play. It's funny, I saw three doctors and they all said there was no way it was HSV with the chlamydia. It seems logical to me based on the facts. What a disaster. If you need any research subjects I am happy to help. What are some good bio engineering fields that deal with viruses? I'm thinking about going back for a MS.
Gonorrhea often causes severe pain in the urethra, and so does herpes--but chlamydia usually does not. And you should have told me you tested negative for HSV-2 less than a year ago. With this additional information, most likely you indeed acquired both HSV-2 and chlamdia simultaneously.
Thank you for your help, Dr.
This is how ignorant I am.. I thought clap was for chlamydia.. I had chlamydia. I don't think it changes much. The chlamydia was EXTREMELY painful. There was no way I could just go - had to pinch off and start slow. I suspect the initial HSV outbreak was inside with the chlamydia because of the delayed response to the meds - HSV needed more time to heal. Then maybe the secondary outbreak were the spots - who knows. I found out she has HSV1 and 2. I was dumb - she had a discharge a while back and said she had it checked out and it was a fem problem. Now it's my problem.
I was negative for HSV1 and 2 in October of last year. What I thought was a cold sore had a second round of blisters after the initial "cold sore" outbreak. Is that possible with a canker sore?
I am circumcised. The 2nd round of spots I mentioned were pretty itchy. Anyway, the bottom line is I have HSV2 and the ladies LOVE that.
Your symptoms certainly are not typical for genital herpes, in particular without overt blisters or open sores. Your description of the external penile sores sounds pretty nonspecific; and apparently your doctor didn't think they looked like herpes lesions. If herpes had occurred inside the urethra, you probably would have had even more pain than you describe; it tends to be an extremely painful condition. "Twinging" and "random shooting pains" definitely aren't herpes. To your questions:
1) Yes, antibodies to HSV-2 sometimes can appear within 2 weeks. But usually it takes a month or more, most commonly 6+ weeks.
2) Yes, you could have had both gonorrhea and herpes simultaneously. But putting together all the facts, it is more likely that you were infected sometime in the past with HSV-2. But it probably is possible that you were recently infected with both. "Cold sores" do not occur on the inner lip, only on the outside of the mouth. Sores inside the lips or mouth usually are canker sores, an entirely different problem and not due to herpes. In any case, HSV-2 is rarely a cause of oral herpes.
3) I cannot speculate on other causes. But if you're not circumcised, maybe you have a yeast infection under the foreskin, which can cause red spots and can be triggered by antibiotics.
4) No online advice expert can make a definite diagnosis, so I don't have any formal second opinion. But one way to sort this out would be to get in touch with the person you caught the gonorrhea from. If s/he doesn't have HSV-2 (which could be checked out with a blood test), then you will know for sure that you caught only gonorrhea and that your herpes infection goes back to some other time. Almost a quarter of the US population has HSV-2, mostly without symptoms--so it wouldn't be all that surprising in your case.
Good luck-- HHH, MD
