Concerned

Hello,

I recently had sex with a prostitute in Las Vegas. The sex was protected, and was both oral and vaginal.

This was the first time I had sex outside my marriage, and I am afraid of bringing something home to my wife.

I am pretty upset about what happened and have been worrying about it for two days. What would you suggest? Is there cause for concern? Should I wait until I am tested to have relations with my wife? What is my risk?

Not a concern. Your odds of getting HIV are even lower than your chances of getting an STD and, as we discussed, that is most unlikely.  EWH

Doctor,

What is my risk for HIV? Is it something I should be worried about, or is it probably not a concern?

Your risk is very low for having acquired any sort of STD whatsoever.  Condoms are very effective for STD and HIV prevention and in the absence of symptoms of STD there is no medical reason to suggest that you need any testing at all.  I realize however that, very rarely, for persons exposed to infected partners, STD transmission does occur.  As a result, if you wish to be reassured, for your piece of mind you could see your health care provider (if confidentiality is an issue, go to your local STD clinic) and get tested, keeping in mind that this is for reassurance, not because it is likely that you have an infection.  Realistically, the infections most likely to occur would be nongonococcal urethritis, chlamydia or gonorrhea.  None of these are likely and personally, I don't think any testing is needed.  Hope this helps.  EWH
