Three weeks is generally considered the outside limit of onset of HSV symptoms and the vast majority of the time symptoms occur within a few days.
Absence off cold sores in your youth is meaningless. 90% of people with positive HSV-1 results have oral infections but never had known cold sores.
Otherwise I have no comments. You're just going to have to stop arguing with the reassurance you have been given and accept the apparent hard reality that you have no STD and that there is no risk of transmitting anything to your wife.
If you keep posting anxiety-driven comments, the entire thread will be immediately deleted. Good bye.
Dr. HHH, I know you clearly stated that the last post was the end of this thread but I hope you will be willing to comment on this. To my knowledge and I have inquired to my mother, I have never had cold sores. So I may be HSV 1 negative. If I were HSV 1 & 2 negative prior to my encounter and have not experienced any HSV symptoms for 20 days would you ever recommend testing for peace of mind? The clinician I saw who wrongly prescribed the Valtrex stated that the HSV can take up to 43 days to appear but the majority of posts from Dr. Hook and yourself clearly state 2-10 days. I am struggling with thought of potential harm to my wife and a final piece of guidance would be greatly appreciated and undoubetly end my line of questioning.
Thank you.
Please re-read all my responses with care and it will be obvious that my reassurance about sex with your wife was based on my overall assessment of the risk for STDs here, including herpes.. Although your doctor undoubtedly raised your fears of herpes by prescribing Valtrex, which s/he should not have done, it really is not a realistic possibility.
That will be all for this thread.
Dr. HHH, sorry for the additional post, this will be my last. In your initial post you stated under #3 that since I very unlikely contracted anything from this exposure by wife would not be at risk. Was this related to the bacterial infections we discussed? Last night she began experiencing flu-like symptoms and swollen glands in her neck. Do you think this raises concern for HSV infection from our unprotected intercourse on 10/2, the night following my poor choice. Other than the symptoms we discussed I have not experienced anything additional in the past few days. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
A prescription for Valtrex? In this situation??? Ridiculous. Don't waste your money on it. And start to look for a clinician who understands STDs and their symptoms, which yours obviously does not.
HSV-1 can be transmitted by oral-to-genital contact but HSV-2 cannot be. HSV is not a possible cuase for these symptoms.
Sorry, the script was for Valtrex. Also, if there are no visible signs of sores around the mouth can HSV-1 still be transmitted. Thank you.
Thank you for your assistance, this is my last follow-up.
For peace of mind I went in for the screening. The clinician went ahead and took urine for the chlamydia and gonorreha screening. She mentioned that testicular pain is a symptom of both gonorreha and chlamydia infection. Do you think that discomfort makes me a higher probability of a gonnoreha infection in particular.
She also described the potential risks of HSV-1 & 2 and presribed a 30 day script to cover me the time until I can have the 6-week test. What are your thoughts on that? Is HSV 1 or 2 a concern under these circumstances. Can HSV-2 be transmitted from the mouth to the penis?
Thanks again.
Most people in your situation use a friend's credit card and pay the friend back with cash. But you can use the contact link to ask the administration desk about other solutions. In the meantime, spend some time reviewing other questions like yours. Almost all questions have been asked many times. Use the search function.
That chlamydia is asymptomatic doesn't mean that having no symptoms is a sign of chlamydia! Gonorrhea almost always causes symptoms within 2-5 days. Even a couple of doses of doxycycline will make both the gonorrhea and chlamydia tests unreliable. At this point, you're never going to know for sure, but the odds are strong you were not infected so you shouldn't be worried about it.
i wish i could ask the doctor my question :( it´s killing me.. i have no credit card, i can transfer money by wester union
Thank you for your help Dr. Chlamydia was such a concern for me becuase I read 50% of men and 75% of women show no symptoms. Is gonorrhea very symptematic? Would I have had symptoms by now (2 weeks)?
Just to be clear, since I have taken two doses of doxycycline and will have taken a third the time of the screening this morning I should avoid the chlamydia test but take the gonorrhea test? In your opinion an HIV or HSV test wold be unnecessary as well.
Lastly, this forum has been a tremendous resource and your postings as well as those of others have been a tremendous help both physically and emotionally.
Thank you.
Welcome to the forum. Starting from the title you chose for your question plus the opening line: Chlamydia almost never infects the mouth and throat, and therefore cannot be transmitted to the penis by oral sex. You cannot get chlamydial epididymitis from oral sex.
Now I have read the rest of the question. My initial judgment is unchanged.
MedHelp moderators are asked to try to avoid overt disagreements with patients' own doctors. However, I am very skeptical you had epididymitis. That almost always involves only one testicle and is associated with marked swelling and tenderness of that testicle. I believe your testicular discomfort was not due to epididymitis; that it definitely was not due to chlamydia; and that it has nothing at all to do with the oral sex event. To the specific questions:
1) Almost certainly not.
2) Chlamdia is not a likely explanation, at least not from the oral sex event. Of course I can't judge whether you might have chlamydia from your wife or some other source not described here. But your symptoms don't suggest chlamydia anyway.
3) Since you almost certainly caught no STD from the oral sex event, your wife is not at risk for anything from that exposure.
4) Yes. Your symptoms are very typical for genitally focused anxiety, presumably related to the psychological effects of your sexual choices.
5) As discussed above, it is very safe to assume you didn't acquire chlamydia -- but not because of presence or absence of the symptoms you mention.
6) Once you have taken a couple doses of doxycycline, it will not be possible to have a valid chlamydia test. But that really doesn't matter, since chlamydia isn't a realistic possibility in this situation.
Frankly, I suggest you not spend the money on a "complete STD screening". The only STD that can be caught by oral sex, and that would come up on a "complete screening" panel, is gonorrhea. All the rest will be a waste of money.
