Very painful

6 days ago I noticed that it hurt to urinate. It started getting worse so I went to a clinic where they did a urinalysis and saw no bacteria or nothing abnormal so they called it us rites and gave me an antibiotic to take.  It got worse so I went to a urologist who said it could be many things and he was not much help. The last 24 hours I have severe back, and both legs especially in hip joints are killing me.  I cannot sleep and during the day it is all I can do to get through. The urinating pain is a sharp stabbing pain that never seems to be any better. The urologist noticed the penile opening was red and swollen so he asked if I had ever had herpes? I am concerned I have an std. I am married but I have been with women in the past without protection. I have never had anything like this and I don't know what to do? I do not have sores or other red/swollen areas other than my penile opening.  If I have herpes or this is a weird outbreak? Should I be on vaulters and when can I expect to start urinating without being I tears.   Thee doctors have ruled out a UTI and I will most likely have to go back to urologist in a few days to discuss how I am not improving and getting worse.  They asked about kidney stones but the doc did not feel like it was stones but this was before my extreme back, leg butt and hip pain that I am currently dealing with.  Please help as I am confused.   Thanks. mike

thanks.  Given your recent exposure to another partner, as you approach this problem evaluating the possiblity of STIs is probably a reasonable thing to do but the more you describe this, the less it sounds like an STI.  I think you need to work through this with a doctor, perhaps a urologist as you are doing.  EWH

Dr. Thanks for the reply. I had sex 12 days ago with another partner. My stream is hard to say if it is different.  The pain is so bad that it takes me some time to finish urinating as I have to pause multiple times until finished. I have pain inside of penis and it actually is sore after I pee especially to touch from my shaft all way down. There may have been some mild swelling in my left side of my groin pubic area at first. Nothing too painful but I was aware of it. Other than penile tip being swollen and red my penis and surrounding area looks normal.  I have never had back problems before. I work out every day and are pretty aware of my body.   Please help as this is causing much pain and frustration!  Thank you

Welcome to our Forum.  I will try to help. To do so, it would be helpful to me to have a bit more information.  Is there a difference in the way you urinate- trouble starting, stopping or has the nature of the stream changed?  Also, is the pain on the inside of the penis or other locations in and around your groin.  Finally, in terms of your risk for an STI, this really does not sound like herpes which would typically have lesions on the outside of your penis as well as causing pain.  Can you tell me how long it has been since you had sex with someone other than your wife and how many persons you have had sex with other than your wife in the past month or two?

As far as possible causes, painful urination can be caused by many things other than STIs.  Painful urination can originate with problems from kidney stones, the prostate, the bladder itself or even back problems.  Your back and leg pain suggest this is not an STI.

I may be able to comment further once I have heard your replies to the questions I ask above.  EWH
