Your situation still raises no concerns about any STD. EWH
Dr Hook,
Recently (about 4 days ago) after a hard game of squash, I broke out with red hives on my back and chest. This has never happened previously. It was incredibly itchy. The hives went away after about 1.5 days, but I am still very itchy all over. My provider doesn't know what it is or what has caused. Can the massage I described earlier have any role in the itchiness? Thanks,
The timing of the onset of your symptoms is yet another indicator that this is not an STD. STD symptoms do not begin so quickly after intercourse, nor are they worsened by sex. I think it might be helpful to talk this through with a counselor or mental health profesional.
My comments did include HPV. EWH
Also, in your post I assume you include HPV when you say you haven't seen std transmission via hand/masterbation. Is that correct?
Dear Dr Hook,
As per your suggestion, I have been trying to relax about the situation. My wife and I had sex last night and I have had major discomfort on the tip of the penis/uretha area for past few hours. Also, ejaculation burned. My prostate/anus also hurts. I did go to a provider (prior to my last post) who did a urine culture and now I have learned there was no sign of infection in the urine, and the urine was also negative of syphillis and chlymidia. Should I see a urologist? Could I be having a prostate infection - perhaps triggered by the massage oil used on the penis? I am going nuts...perhaps I need to see a shrink as well. Is additional STD required based on the symptoms or for peace of mind? Would appreciate your thoughts...thx!
Many thanks for helping me think clearly and for sharing your academic training and clinical expertise. I hope I will not need your counsel again. In the meanwhile, I will donate to the organization you mentioned. Best wishes for a happy and healthy new year. Your efforts are much appreciated, Dr Hook!!!
1. I would not think that a prolonged back massage could result in transmission of skin disorders.
2. The idea that she may have "snuck" oral sex on you, even for a few seconds, is a bit silly. I would not worry about this
If you wish to donate, please donate to the Ameican Sexual Health Association (ASHA) - they are a great source of information and are helpful to many people. EWH
Thanks Dr Hook.
My guilt has probably got me. Two questions: can a prolonged back massage lead to transmissions of skin disorders? Second, I have wondered if perhaps she may have performed oral on me while my eyes were closed for a few seconds and if that could be responsible for the symptoms above. Would a few seconds be enough for any transmission via receiving oral (I did not see/feel her do this but thought I should ask about it).
Thanks again for thoughtful counsel. It is greatly appreciated.
Is there a charity you care about to which I can contribute this holiday season?
I'm sorry that you are continuing to be concerned about potential consequences of your massage and receipt of masturbation. In our combined over 70 years of STD focused practice, as well as in the medical literature and in conversations with colleagues, neither of us has ever seen an STD (including herpes) be transmitted through receipt of masturbation.
Sometimes when we are on the lookout for symptoms we focus in a way that makes us more aware of sensations or skin irregularities that we would not notice otherwise. There are no STDs that cause burning on ejaculation as a symptom. Similarly, the rash on your back and waist is not a typical STD symptom.
I hope my further comments are helpful. EWH
