herpes or something else

Saw Dr. for ache in the scrotum,  did std swab test and gave me Meds for STD(which was negative for chlamydia and gonorrea) ultra sound showed epididmyitis Early Nov. i found little spots on my scrotum, Dr. said they were very normal,  check them several times a  day.    I then started to itch in the inner thigh and scotum, i thought it might be from not irritation from condoms or not drying well in the area. I tried lotrimin af on the area because i thought fungal infection, it burnned so i stopped. The Dr. thought the epididyitis was still there so she put me on cripo for 14 days
last exposure late Nov. I started to have burning in my scrotum, some in my legs and butt, anus and some irriation on my penis , I have been checked twice by 2 Dr.s  said they did not see anything including herpe sores
It is Jan. and the burnning is still there(no sores)   Most of the burnning is in the scrotum and it is much worst when i m in jeans and sitting down. I did have a couple of times where i had a white type of residue on the tip of my penis in the morning that wiped off with water, I never had any discharge.
A week and a half ago I had what i think is a pimple on my butt left side, late last week another on the right side, and yesterday another one on the left side. I also just started having lower back pain and a few slight head aches
I forgot to mention I did finger with a finger that had a small piece of skin missing from the day before

1.  Can herpes burn and not have sores
2.  Does herpes last for 7- 8 weeks
3.  Could i get herpes in my finger if i have had no sores yet
4.  How high of risk was am i for herpes with having protected sex and fingering
5.  Should i get tested with this exposure/ should you get test if you have had no herpe sores
6.  Her body did not touch my butt so can i assume that i have pimple on my butt and nothing more
7.  Is it a better chance that i irritated the area from checking it so much rather than herpes

A comment, i wish you and Dr. Hook would write a book that we could buy and use as the general public.  i have 2 teenagers and it would be nice to have a source from experts that we could use and trust to give them the correct info.  i could give several examples, but i think you have said it in other threads do not believe everthing you read.  i really believe a book by the two of you would be a great resourse for this site, i know there is a lot of facts about herpes that is not taught about in sex ed classes. thank you for your time

i would like to read your posting that you put on here, what day and what was the title.  what was the outcome of seeing the neurologist?  did you have sexual activity right before your symptoms and have they cleared up now?

If the 2005 thread has a comment from me, you misinterpreted it.  I would not  have every said sciatica is due to herpes or that HSV-2 infects the sciatic nerve.  In rare cases, the neuropathic prodrome associated with an HSV-2 outbreaks might cause pain similar to sciatica.  But that's only in people with recurrent genital herpes lesions, which you do not have; and such pain would last no more than a couple of days before the outbreak begins.  The syndrome called sciatica is entirely different and is never caused by HSV.

You need to drop the idea that you have herpes or that you have any medical condition at all as a result of the sexual encounter you described in your original question. Almost certainly you do not.

i looked at a posting from Aug. 15 2005 where the guy asked could the sciatica nerve be affected by herpes( i have had sciatica problems), the answer was yes but only with sores where would the sores be located? the nerve is very large so would the sores be anywhere on there or on the genitals?
update my dermatologist has me putting desonate on for 2 weeks it has helped, i assume since it helps it suggest that it was not herpes.

Neither HSV nor shingles causes such symptoms, and you are correct that neither would last this long.  I don't know what you have, but definitely not either of those.  This forum has nothing further to offer you.  Sorry.

9999999999999. I have had similar symptoms for 2-3 months. My general practictioner ran some pretty thorough tests. That is probably where to start. Those tests may include diabetes, vitamin deficiency, thyroid, mri, etc. Depending on the results, they may refer you to a specialist. Mine referred me to a neurologist.

I initially had some concern that it was herpes, but I have had two negative tests. My neurologist had a similar opinion to Dr. Hook and what Dr. HHH said here. If you search the board, you will find numerous cases similar to what you are describing. I cannot find a one on medhelp that was confirmed as herpes.

1. still a prickly feeling the scrotum
2. some numbness/tingling in the right buttocks, some tingling in the left
3. some soreness on the penis skin
4. still no sores

from what you wrote herpes does not last this long, so i assume you still would answer the same as you did before(not an std).  i have had shingles before would this be a possiblity?  what type of Doctor would i go see next for answers?

if i had shingles and HSV 1 is it harder for someone to get HSV 2 and if they did would it be less sever than someone who did not have either of them?
if i get the blood test done for HSV 2 would having shingles make the test result number go up or down?

Thanks for asking, but it is out of print.  My Color Atlas and Synopsis of Sexually Transmitted Diseases is available (although more expensive) and the herpes chapter contains almost everything the herpes booklet did.

Both my books were intended for health professionals, so the terminology may be a bit dense.  The best book on genital herpes intended for infected persons or other non-health professionals is Understanding Herpes by Charles Ebel and Anna Wald, published by the American Social Health Association (www.ashastd.org).

Epididymitis always causes overt swelling and marked pain to even light touch of the involved testicle.  Fungal infections rarely if ever cause such symptoms.  No knowing the cause, I don't know if your symptoms will go away--but probably yes if you'll just get your mind off it.  Yeast is a kind of fungus, so see above.

You might have the male pelvic pain syndrome, which often goes along with the stress/anxiety idea I suggested in my original reply.  Google "chronic pelvic pain syndrome" and look first at the excellent Wikipedia article, which is one of top several google hits.

Also re-read the closing paragraph of my reply above.  I will have no further comments on this thread.

I have had a vesectomy i do not not if that matters.  The ultra sound showed epididymitis, thats how i knew i had.

I have an appointment with a dermatolgy Dr appointment but not until March 3rd.

My question are:

can epididymitis cause burning or is it always an ache or is this out of your area and would rather not comment on it?

could i have a fungus, if so how would i know?  can a Dr. do a test or is it just by checking?

can you have a fungus with out a rash, and just burning?  will it go away by itself or will i need to be treated?

could my burning be a yeast infection, i know guys do not get them often but is it a possiblity?

I am not concerned about STD with my ex we were never with anyone else, its just my recent partner and even the she was tested, the only one i do not know if she was tested for was herpes.  My concern has gone down because of lack of sore and the amount of time i have had the burning.

First, some general comments.  You describe few symptoms that suggest STD.  Whether or not you originally had epididymitis, you provide no real evidence it is persisting. Most important, when multiple providers have been directly involved in someone's care and did not identify an STD, almost never is an STD present; and in any case, a distant online expert cannot evaluate such issues better than direct examination by a knowledgeable provider, and you have seen at least 2 of them.

To the specifci questions:

1) No.

2) Herpes outbreaks always go from red bump to sore to healing within 2 weeks--sometimes 3 weeks but never longer.

3) People don't catch herpes by fingering.  And if herpes affected a finger, the typical sores would be obvious.

4) Zero or close to it.

5) Based on what you describe, there is no point in laboratory testing for HSV.  You could be tested, but if positive, it would mean you have asymptomatic herpes plus some other explanation for your symptoms.

6) Even if there had been direct contact, the buttock is a rare place for initial herpes.  Recurrent oubreaks can appear there, but even that is the exception.

7) Repeated rubbing and massaging certainly can cause soreness.

All in all, it is most likely that none of your symptoms has anything to do with the sexual encounter you describe, except that some of your symptoms might be mostly psychological, i.e. the result of anxiety over the event.  In any case, there is nothing to suggest you have anything that will ever harm you or a future sex partner.

I hope this helps. Best wishes.  HHH, MD
