Herpes Symptoms?

I had unprotected intercourse with a new partner about 7 days ago.  Within 24 hours, I began to experience what I can only describe as discomfort at the tip of my penis.  The next day this had turned into discomfort down the urethra.  That discomfort lasted for a few days, but was never exacerbated by urination.  I was also simultaneously experiencing some flu-like symptoms (sore throat, some fatigue), but the sore throat actually came on prior to the encounter.  I did have slight numbness in my left leg yesterday, but it has gone.  I have brief periods where there is a tickling feeling under my scrotum.  I went to see my usual STD MD today and he wasn't nearly as concerned as I am, but wants to wait and see (my new partner is getting tested tomorrow).  My MD thinks my extremely high anxiety level, which is not allowing me to eat or sleep, is contributing to some of my symptoms.  I currently have no visible redness, lesions, bumps or other abnormalities on or around my genitals.  Do these symptoms sound consistent with early infection of genital herpes?

For sure this isn't herpes or any other STD.  If your doctor didn't think it is serious, you shouldn't be worried.

Doctors,

One follow up.  When I went to my MD, I did show him a small red spot in the area where my left inner thigh meets by trunk near my pubic region.  It is next to a tag mole.  He was totally unconcerned with the way it looked, but it continues to concern me.  I looked at it again this morning and it looks the same.  There is no pain or itching associated with it, and no other redness or discomfort in the area.  Thoughts?

Doctor,

Thank you very much for the follow up.  I think I may be able to sleep a little tonight.  You are doing a great service here.

Welcome to the forum.

I agree with your doctor, both in reassuring you about herpes and -- as best I can tell from this distance -- with his or her concern for anxiety as the main problem.  Herpes does not cause the sorts of symptoms you describe, except in the presence of overt herpes blisters and sores.  But they are typical for genitally focused anxiety.

If you remain concerned, continue to follow-up with your doctor.  But I see no basis for any worry about herpes or any other STD, based on yoru symptoms.

Regards--  HHH, MD
