Straight to your question. your results show that you have HSV-1, the virus that causes most cold sores and a minority of cases of genital herpes and that you do not have HSV-2. HSV-1 infections are very common with over 60% of adult Americans having the infection. Of these only about 1 out of 10 infected persons know it.
These tests are not useful for definitively diagnosing recently acquired HSV infections so, depending on your situation/exposure history and circumstance, repeat testing may be useful. You should discuss this with your doctor when he/she returns.
For additional information on HSV infections, I would suggest seeking addition information on sites such as the American Social health Association web-site (disclosure, Dr. Handsfield and I are both on the Board of ASHA) EWH
It is still most likely that your HSV-1 infection represents oral infection. It could be spread to others by oral contact although the risk is low. EWH
Thank you for your response! It helps a lot.
I have never had a cold sore though or have I had an outbreak of any kind. Is it possible to have HSV-1 without ever having a cold sore or showing any signs? Also, is it possible to spread since I do not have cold sores?
