Herpes with a condom?

Dear Doctors,
Firstly I'd like to say how much I admire the work you do here. - I very stupidly went with a friend to a motel in Florida on Sept 14th after much drinking and used a prostitute working there to recieve oral sex. I insisted on using a condom which she produced (unaware of the brand/type) and she put on me. She then performed oral sex on me. I'm fairly certain the condom did not break but on removing it with a tissue she wiped my penis with the same tissue. I had asked to kiss her before and she refused so I am not sure if that is a good or bad sign. afterwards I felt very guilty and over the following weeks I had a headache, aches and pains etc which I attributed to the guilt. Yesterday I noticed very small red pimple - like bumps running up the under-shaft of my penis on both sides of the centre vein. This morning I went to the std clinic and got the whole panel of tests. Could this be herpes? I had a girlfriend with frequent oral herpes outbreaks before and despite kissing here during these outbreaks I never seemed to aquire HSV 1. What do you think my risks are regarding Herpes, other STD's and HIV? - thanks for your help.

Your exposure was condom protected receipt of oral sex.  Oral sex is an inefficient way to transmit STDs and when condoms are used correctly, the risk becomes essentially non-existent.  Your chances of having gotten an STD of any sort from the exposure that you describe is just about zero.  I am confident that your tests will be negative.

So what about the rash on your penis?  It certainly does not in any way sound like herpes, nor is the exposure you describe compatible with having gotten it.  when you went to the STD clinic were you examined? If so, if your lesions were at all suggestive of herpes I suspect they would have told you so and tested the bumps.  The way to sort these out is to be examined by a health care provider.  They may well be normal.

Hope this helps.  the lesions you describe are most unlikely to be herpes and your risk from this exposure is about as close to zero as can be.  EWH

No, despite having HSV and being uncircumcised the fact is that you have had a negative HIV test at a time when over 98% of tests that are going to turn positive will be.  In your situation, you do not need re-testing for the expsoure you described.  This thread is over.  EWH

Dear Doctor Hook,

Thank you very much for your help. I found out that my Igg for HSV-2 was 3.84 therefore herpes unfortunately. However upon visiting another Doctor for further inspection my original complaint turned out to be follicutis.
Given that I have HSV-2 which raises the risk for other Std's I retested for HIV, Hepatitis and Syphilis at nearly 10 weeks post exposure with negative results thankfully.
I did this because whilst removing the condom with a tissue after the protected oral event the prostitute let the base/ring of the condom come into contact with the penis glands momentarily while cleaning up the tip with the tissue.

My absolute final question I promise if you will allow it is do you think I should retest for HIV at 12 weeks for closure given that I have HSV-2 and am un-circumsised.

I really appreciate all your help and patience in a difficult time.

As I said 13 answers ago, your chances of STD of any sort from the exposure you described were very close to zero.  Nothing has changed since then.  I will not answer further questions unless there is some sort of data to help you interpret.  Re-peat testing of any sort has little or no medical indication.  EWH

Hi Doctor,

Despite my best efforts I have been unable to obtain the numeric results of my Herpes tests so far. This has been very frustrating and to be honest I just want to move on with my life.
From reading the posts I gather it is very unlikely to get HSV-2 from receiving oral sex and more likely that I got it before this.
My std panel was taken only 3.5 weeks after my protected oral encounter with the CSW so even though the rest of my results were negative I am still worried about syphilis and HIV.
I intend to test again, how much longer should I wait. It's been exactly one month now, how long would you recommend before I retest.
I will continue to try and obtain the HSV results and sorry for the amount of follow-ups but I am really quite anxious from this whole experience.

I'm going to defer further comment until you have more information.  Like you I am not sure that there is any benefit to be derrived from taking the acyclovir.  EWH

Hi Doctor,

I was given these STD tests through a service called the 'Quality of Life Group' based in Illinois I believe who in turn set up this test for me at a local clinic. I was given IGM and IGG tests. I recieved the results over the phone this afternoon however I was not given any figures.
Unfortunately I won't be able to contact them untill Monday to get the figures as they are closed now.
After recieving the results I visited a local Doctor, told him my situation regarding the results and asked him to inspect my penis. He inspected my penis and said it could be a mild herpes outbreak and asked if I would like a perscription. - That was it really...
To be honest I don't think whatever this rash is on my penis merits taking medication Herpes or not as it seems to be clearing itself up and is so mild anyway with no irritation or discomfort whatsoever.
I will get the figures for you Doctor but  in any case would you recommend further STD testing in a few months?
I really appreciate all your help!

For starters, I woold like to hear more about the test you received.  Was it the IgG or IgM test?  What was the numerical value of the test result as well- generally the specific testssuch as the HerpeSelect give you a numerical test result.  Once I get this infomration I cna help you with interpretation.

As for where this infection came form, if you have herpes, you probably did not get if from your recent CSW encounter.  whether the "yeast infection" of several years ago was an outbreak is now impossible to tell.

Also, did the doctor who called your rash herpes and put you on acyclovir take a culture?  this is very important for knowing if indeed you did have herpes or not.

Hope this helps.  Let me know when you ahve more information.  EWH

Hello again Doctor,

I visited a Doctor just now having got the HSV 2 positive result. He examined me and said it could be a mild outbreak and perscribed me Acyclovir. I have two questions really...

1. Do you think that I should take further STD testing in a few months given that this test was so soon after the exposure with CSW and that other STDs could show up positive in due course?

2. Also about over two years ago shortly after having condom protected vaginal sex I got what my Doctor viewed as a yeast infection on my penis which caused slight burning on urination and later blistered painfully in two places close together and then went away over the course of two months. - Do you think this could have been the more likely source of infection?

Thank you very much for all your help.

Dear Doctor,

I recieved my results today of my STD panel - All was negative bar HSV 2 which came up positive! I was given IGM and IGG testing. I am unsure what to do now - the small red bumps on my penis seem to be healing themselves and are almost gone now( over the course of three days) and I don't have any itchiness or burning upon urination.
Is it possible that this could be a false positive given that I got tested only 3.5 weeks after my exposure and should I get further STD testing in a few months to see if anything else will turn up positive?

Thanks

I would still think it would be to your benefit to seek and examination of the rash/lesions you describe.  Please let us know what they say.  Good luck.  EWH

Hi Doctor,

Thanks for the assurance. -I was not physically examined by a doctor unfortunately but just given the blood and urine tests by a nurse. However I will be getting the results over the next few days and will let you know. All the best.

I'm not sure what you have on your penis but I'm pretty sure it's not from your encounter with the prostitute.  As far as hsv 1 i'm not sure about your ex.  My wife gets lip sores and has given me head with them before, by accident, and I don't think I have anything, been with her for 9 yrs.

Perhaps I should add my panel of tests were of blood and urine type taken in a Labcorp facility and I have not had any penile discharge or itchiness symptoms as of now - Many thanks again.
