Herpies?

Well, I’ve been forced to resort to the internet. Unlike most of the posters, I have been seen by docs, a few times.

I have had unprotected sex with few people, I know with herpies it doesn’t matter b/c so many ppl are carriers and most don’t know. I have had sex with a -------and used a condom of course.  Yeah that was dumb I know -=/ Not sure if that’s where this came from or what. The facts I know :

I had a first out break which had 3-4 soars separate from each other not clustered. They were never blisters, just soars and one of them blew up into a large white flaky rashy skin on one side of my penis. 2nd out break was quick and in only 2 spots, again no blisters. Same with current. My MD saw them and said prob herpies, did a swab and I passed it. I then took my own blood test and had a very marginal positive, and from reading here I hear 3-4 range is what considered positive, not 1.23.  I took another test back at kiaser 2 months later, a blood test that is and was negative again at which point my MD said prob not Herpies, and sent me to a derm who also said doesn’t sound like it. I can never get in when I have an out break for derm to see, which is very frustrating for me. I don’t know what to do, or what to tell ppl im sleeping with. As far as I know I don’t have any proof I have it. But I have something.  What could be triggering this? I had a theory it was spermicidal jelly, derm told me to rub some on my inner elbow which I did with no results, however of course the next day I broke out down stairs. What else will pop up in same location?

yeah it does doc, does the positive type2 fit in as a possible error, considering my other blood test from kaiser was a neg, and is the blood test kaiser would be different than the one i took or basically the same?

Thanks, this is helpful.  First about your test results:

You do not have HSV-1 and it is unlikely that you have HSV-2 either.  Your HSV-2 test results are in the "low positive" range where 75-80% of results are falsely positive.

Your rash does not sound like herpes and the negative culture result supports that impression.  There are many dermatological problems which can cause a rash of the sort you describe.  One possibility is that you have a fungal slin infection of the penis.  These can occur in more than one spot and are associated with itching.  My advice would be to talk with your dermatologist, explain that this problem is bothing you a quite a bit and ask if there is a way that you can come and get the rash seen immediately the next time it occurs.  Your dermatologist should agree to this plan.

Hope this helps.  EWH

    .
Note: Negative indicates no antibodies detected to
HSV-2. Equivocal may suggest early infection. If
clinically appropriate, retest at later date. Positive
indicates antibodies detected to HSV-2; coinfection
with HSV-1 cannot be excluded without type specific
    testing.

I have read the description of the rash you get on your penis and seen your lab results but still have a question or two.  Your post indicates that you had a type-specific blood test for HSV-1 which was negative.  Have you also been tested for HSV-2?  I suspect that if you have been tested for one virus you have been tested for both.  When you get back to me I can continue to comment on your situation.  EWH
