Man with hpv 52 & 59 positive

Hello Dr,

I'm a 26 man from China, and I had a protected vaginal sex and unprotected oral sex with a sex worker more than 3 months ago. A month ago, I find sth on my penis and went to the doctor and  the doctor told me it's sebaceous which is not serious but he asked me to do a hpv test. However, the test showed I have the hpv 52 and hpv 59. The doctor gave me  Imiquimod and asked me to go back three months later.

Here is my question.

1, I read your posts and found hpv is quite common among adults. So do I need to worry about it? And will hpv 52 and 59 cause warts?

2, Is it useful for me to use  Imiquimod with no genital warts? Or does  Imiquimod useful to help me clear the hpv virus in three months?

3, I also have an ulcers on my penis a week ago which can be seen when it's wet (it become white), and it disappear after 5 days. I kind of thought it's because of the allergy of Imiquimod. But does herpes appear 3 months after the sex?

4, Cause I have hpvs, and I have to share bath room with my parents which makes me very scared cause I hope them ok. I know it's hard to tranfer without sex contact, but I still wonder is there anything I can do to make it even less possible?

Thank you very much!

Welcome to the forum.  Thanks for your question.

Most experts would not have recommended HPV testing.  In fact, tests for HPV are not even available in most countries.  A sebaceous cyst is definitely not due to HPV, and your postiive HPV test has nothing to do with that.  And both the cyst and HPV probably did not come from the sexual exposure 3 months earlier.  It takes up to 1-2 years for HPV to appear after being exposed -- it might appear at 3 months, but it is just as likely you had it before that exposure.  Oral sex rarely transmits HPV.

1) It is correct that HPV is common.  Almost all sexually active people are infected at one time or another.  Most infections cause no symptoms, just like yours; and almost all clear up on their own and do not harm sex partners.  This is why all experts recommend that genital HPV testing is pointless:  there is nothing you can do about it, and no harm will come -- so why do it?

2) There is definitely no need for treatment.  Do not do it.

3) If you used imiquimod and the ulcers occurred in that area, that may be the cause, especially if you leaved the product in place too long without washing.  It isn't allergy, just chemical irritation.  But the most common cause overall of penile ulcers is herpes.   You should be checked for that possibility, especially if imiquimod does not appear to be the cause.

4) Your parents are not at risk.  HPV is only transmitted by sex, and never in the household, including with people who share toilets, showers, etc.

I hope this has helped. Best wishes--  HHH, MD

I agree these lesions are not ulcers -- and they are not herpes for sure.  If they continue, show them to a doctor, but I think they are normal sweat glands of the penis.

To my knowledge, HPV 52 and 59 usually do not cause warts, cancer, or other symptoms.

That will end this thread.  If you have further questions, I suggest you ask your own doctor.  Good luck.

Sorry doctor, and the second thing want to make clear. I know th hpv52 and 59 are not the low risk hpv that cause genital warts, but can they also cause warts? What I mean is if I just have hpv 52 and 59, I won't have symptoms?

Thank you very much doctor!

So I want to make it clear does herpes appear 3 months after the sex? Because English is not my first language, I don't know whether “ulcers” properly means what I have. In fact, it's like the "ulcers" in the mouth, look like a "flat white bubble", and in the end, it become a white hard tiny point and disappear. It's on the glans not on the skin of penis. (I just use the google translate to have the word glans..)
